Musicals use song and dance as an outlet for emotion when the feelings are too strong. Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) uses comic book effects and video game fighting.
When Scott’s dream girl Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) becomes a reality, he vows to do anything in his power to be with her. Little does he know Ramona’s League of Seven Evil Exes will stop at nothing to make him prove it. Ramona has dated some bad characters in the past – a skateboarding action star, twin Japanese musicians, a vegan bassist, and even a record producer with the power of mind control. Scott is just a lowly bass player in a garage band called Sex Bob-Omb, but his feelings for Ramona give him more power than all of the other characters  combined. Scott must defeat (not fight, DEFEAT) the League if he ever wants a chance at being with Ramona.
Michael Cera is the “John Everyman” of the new generation.  His characters are typically awkward, not good with ladies, and he spends more time with video games and comic books than in inter-personal interactions. There is something in him that everyone can relate to nowadays.  And Scott Pilgrim, the character from graphic novel sensation of the year, is very much the same.
Cera was perfect in the role, showing the awkwardness of someone just coming out of his teen years, the confidence
of standing up for the girl he loves, and the steel gaze of a third-person fighting game characters as he faces off in level after level of Boss Battles.
Each Ex being worst than the last, the final battle forces him to turn inward and confront his own demons.
All the wonderful things that people are saying about this film are true. Whether you are an avid gamer, or you think the N64 is a special Scrabble piece, this is an overall fun movie. I recommend it to everyone.
So grab your lucky controller, throw on a clean sweatband, and don’t miss this film.
Rated PG-13, I give this movie 5 out of 5 stars.
