BILL UKROPINA GUEST SPEAKER AT KIWANIS CLUB GLENDALE
Bill Ukropina will be the guest speaker at the Oct. 12 lunch meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale. He will be speaking on “Practice, Patience and Perseverance ¬– The Three ‘P’s’ of Success.”
Guests are welcome at the lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15.

KID’S (NOTTOOSCARY) HALLOWEEN HAUNTED HOUSE
On Wednesday, Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills is having its yearly Halloween Haunted House and is inviting the community to come for a fun experience and a ”safe place” to bring the kids. This is a perfect haunted house for younger children ages 3-11. The evening will include free photos of your child in costume on the orange carpet, tours through the haunted maze ending off with parents having a chance to enter a free raffle for some wonderful winnings! Admission is free.

‘MUSIC IN A DAY!’ LIVE WORKSHOP DEBUT
The “Music In A Day!” live workshop, introducing the revolutionary Music Decoding System, will be presented to the public for the first time on Thursday, Nov. 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in La Crescenta. Attending the debut is free but is limited to 10 people.
By the end of the workshop, attendees will be able to identify, explain and demonstrate the basic building blocks of reading music and will compose an original piece of music. Participation in music significantly enhances brain function, discipline and emotional well-being. Johnson has taught violin repertoire and music theory to children and adults since 1996.

 

CHASING HISTORY AT BOLTON HALL
Bolton Hall Museum – home of Little Landers Historical Society – announced a unique and fun historical hunt created by Little Landers. Chasing History is on Nov. 3 with clues provided to 16 intriguing historical sites in Sunland, Tujunga, Lake View Terrace, Shadow Hills and La Crescenta. Start the quest at Bolton Hall Museum at 2:30 p.m. and gather at McGroarty Arts Center by 6 p.m. for the evening of prize awards, photo viewing, sharing of the day’s adventures and dinner. Those who prefer not to “Chase” may still join in on the evening’s fun and dinner.

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS
Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This new series will mark the beginning of the 18th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike and explores the histories of composers and their music. The topic for this new series is “Musicals in the 20th Century.”
The 10-week series of classes continues every Tuesday through Dec. 4 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

NINTH SEASON FOR SALON DE MUSIQUES
The next performance of Salon de Musiques is on Nov. 4 and is titled, “Embark for Vienna.” It features a program for piano and strings by European masters Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. It will be performed by four virtuosos consisting of Tereza Stanislav, violin, Jonathan Moerschel, viola,
Eric Byers, cello and Eva Schaumkell, piano.
An informal Q&A with the artists will follow the performance and a gourmet high tea buffet will be served that includes French champagne and is provided by Patina.

EVOLUTION OF THE LOS ANGELES SKYLINE
Little Landers Historical Society will next host Dave McMenamin at its monthly second Saturday historical educational program on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall. The program will explain the elements and major events that influenced the development of the LA Skyline since 1900. Why do older LA skyscrapers have flat tops? What is happening to older buildings in Los Angeles? These and other questions will be answered.
McMenamin is a native Angelino and lifelong resident of the city, residing in La Crescenta and Shadow Hills for the past 33 years. He has a degree in mathematics from Occidental College and a masters and Ph.D in economics from UCLA. He is currently director of Education for Las Angelitas and works with the Los Angeles Conservancy.
This event is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome.

PASADENA HERITAGE CRAFTSMAN WEEKEND
In its 27th year, Pasadena Heritage will present the Annual Craftsman Weekend on Nov. 9-11 that will features house tours of notable Craftsman properties, along with bus and walking tours of the surrounding neighborhoods. Other events scheduled include a Show and Sale with exhibitors of antique and contemporary furniture and decorative arts, a silent auction, workshops and presentations. MOUNTAINS RESTORATION TRUST AT SIERRA CLUB
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents Mountains Restoration Trust on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.
The Mountains Restoration Trust is committed to working in partnership with the community to preserve, protect and enhance the natural resources of the Santa Monica Mountains for the benefit of the environment and for present and future generations through land acquisition and conservation easements, habitat preservation and research and preservation. A slide show and commentary will enhance the community’s understanding of this important legacy; all are invited.

SWEET ADELINES AT FOREST LAWN
The RiverOaks chapter of Sweet Adelines International presents “CLUEless, a Musical Mystery” featuring Detective “Sherlock Tones,” his assistant “Whatsong,” the award-winning Troubadour Quartet; guest quartet “Trouble;” and lots of intrigue, humor and barbershop-style music. NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE S-T BRANCH LIBRARY
The Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga Library bookstore, located in the lobby of the library, has books that range in topics from travel, sports, and education to psychology and biographies. The store also has CDs, DVDs and records. Prices range from 10 cents to $3. Currently, children’s books and cookbooks are on sale for 10 cents (excluding special editions). FREE STROKE SUPPORT GROUP, AND HEART LECTURE
A stroke support group hosted by Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center meets the second Tuesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Rehabilitation Conference Room on the third floor of the hospital.
The support group is open to caregivers, family members, friends and stroke survivors and will help with communication, education, and coping styles while building friendships, solving problems and sharing resources and experience.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).
Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m. This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
