Saluting Our Volunteers

I’ve repeatedly shared how great I think our community is. In addition to the physical beauty of it, nestled between the Angeles National Forest and the Verdugos, our community turns out whenever there is a call to action or in response to something that benefits us all. For example, this newspaper.

When I started it in 2009 it was after those who are much more educated than I in matters of these types – the bigwigs at the LA Times – closed the CV Sun where I used to work. I started the CV Weekly in response to that closure, knowing that our community deserved a paper to call its own. And I was right.

From the get-go, supporters came with money in hand to subscribe or advertise in the CV Weekly. It was because of them that the paper is around today.

After nine years in the same office at 3800 La Crescenta Ave., I’ve decided to move us upstairs. I put a call out for boxes via social media and immediately received responses from readers ready to give me some. I even had one reader ask if I needed manual labor; he was ready to lend a hand. (Note: as of Monday, Nov. 5, we should be settled in unit #206. Our phones might be funky though on Friday through Sunday.)

Another example is the Haunted Jail at the CV Sheriff’s Station. The venture took months to plan and build, and volunteers came out to do it. It ended up being more than what I expected – creepy, scary and so much fun.

Tonight, Thursday, I will be attending the annual recognition banquet hosted by the CV Chamber of Commerce. This night will recognize those in the community who make the Crescenta Valley the very special place that I – and so many others – call home. Among the businesses and individuals honored will be names familiar to those who volunteer. They can be found at schools, with non-profit organizations or religion institutions, ready to lend a hand.

I’m excited to be among those who have the chance to recognize these special people and know that CV Weekly readers join me in congratulating them.
