The next Free Admission Glendale Noon Concerts takes place on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 12:10 p.m. to 12:40 p.m. at the sanctuary of Glendale City Church. The concert will feature the Transcendence ensemble performing selections from Claude Bolling’s Suite No.2 for Jazz Flute and piano trio. The program will feature Part 1 Espiegle, Part 2 Amoureuse, Part 3 Entr’ Amis and Part 4 Vagabonde. Performers are Ruth Kasckow, flute, Tomoko Takasugi, piano, Leslie Baker, bass and Ken Park, drums.
Park graduated from Southern Illinois University with a bachelor of music degree. Since moving to California he has recorded with Tammy Wynette, Capitol Records, Peggy Lee, Doc Severinson ¬– “Tonight Show,” Donna Summer, Casablanca Records, Barry Manilow, Arista Records, Kitaro, Geffen Records. He has performed in concerts and tours with Ella Fitzgerald, Whitney Houston, Donna Summer (world tour), Barry Manilow (world tour), Kitaro (world tour), Broadway Show – “Tintypes,” new age group Istar, Crystal Palace Ragtime Band and Magic’s John Blues Band. He has performed for several television series as well. Currently, he is principal timpanist/percussionist with Beach Cities Symphony Orchestra where he performed a Marimba solo with the orchestra. He teaches privately.
Bassist Baker is a Los Angeles native who has been involved with music from an early age. Her father, Dick Baker, was a professional pianist and vocal coach. He started her on piano and reading music at age 6. By 12, at his suggestion, Baker began playing bass. Very shortly after, she was performing on double bass with her dad at his gigs. Baker plays electric and acoustic basses, sings, composes and arranges music. Honored as a Living Legend of Jazz and Blues in 2017, Baker continues to perform in a wide variety of venues. She is a currently member of the Caltech Orchestra and LAPD concert and swing band. In September 2018, Baker was the only bass in the string section for the Dave Matthews Band when it closed its summer tour and sold out the Hollywood Bowl. There have been numerous TV and movie appearances and recordings including “Star Trek TNG,” “Frasier,” “House,” and “Bones.”
As a bandleader, Baker books the Leslie Baker Band and the chamber group Transcendence for special events, concerts, workshops and shows. The reviews from clients are consistently positive.
Kasckow, flutist and flute instructor, performs regularly in orchestras, chamber music ensembles, and solo recitals in the Los Angeles area, and has performed with Orquesta Mexicana de la juventud, Burbank Symphony, Opera a la Carte, and Santa Monica Symphony. Active as a music educator, she teaches flute and ensembles in her studio in La Cañada. As a certified Andover educator, she teaches musicians body mapping – a movement educational method that assists musicians in improving performance and avoiding injury. Her body mapping workshops have been presented at Cal State Northridge, Jim Walker’s Beyond the Masterclass, Music Teachers Association of California, Performing Arts Medical Association, and National Flute Association. Kasckow wrote “The Flute Duet Practice Books” and has recorded two solo CDs: French Impressions for Flute and German Expressions for Flute. She holds a BA in music from Goucher College and an MFA in flute performance from California Institute of the Arts.
Takasugi started playing piano at the age of 5. After graduating from the Osaka College of Music with a degree in piano performance and teaching, she began an active career in Japan and in the U.S., specializing in piano duos and accompaniment. She has performed chamber music with The Tuesday Musicale of Pasadena and is an organist and instructor with the choir at Centenary United Methodist Church in Los Angeles. Currently, she is a teacher at Asahi Gakuen Japanese Language School.
