DR. NITA VALLENS GUEST SPEAKER AT KIWANIS CLUB GLENDALE
At the Friday, Nov. 9 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale, Dr. Nita Vallens will be speaking on “A New Way of Looking At and Healing Relationships.”

‘FACES PLACES’ SCREENING AT BRAND LIBRARY RECITAL HALL
The Brand Associates (non-profit arm of the Brand Library & Art Center) will screen the award winning documentary film “Faces Places” at the Brand Library & Art Center Recital Hall today, Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. This event is co-hosted by the City of Glendale Arts & Culture Commission and is free to attend.
After the film, attendees can engage in a discussion with a panel of leading experts in the world of public art. The focus of the discussion will center on the promise and challenges of a public art program in Glendale as the City embarks on the launch of its newly adopted Urban Art Program Plan. This event is co-hosted by the City of Glendale Arts & Culture Commission.

WOMEN’S COUNCIL HOSTS WINE TASTING
The USC Verdugo Hills Hospital Women’s Council is hosting a wine tasting fundraiser on Nov. 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The evening includes sips and light fare (provided by ETC. Gourmet Kitchen) in support of the USC-VHH neo-natal ICU.

EVOLUTION OF THE LOS ANGELES SKYLINE
Little Landers Historical Society will next host Dave McMenamin at its monthly second Saturday historical educational program on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall. The program will explain the elements and major events that influenced the development of the LA Skyline since 1900. Why do older LA skyscrapers have flat tops? What is happening to older buildings in Los Angeles? These and other questions will be answered.
McMenamin is a native Angelino and lifelong resident of the city, residing in La Crescenta and Shadow Hills for the past 33 years. He has a degree in mathematics from Occidental College and a masters and Ph.D in economics from UCLA. He is currently director of Education for Las Angelitas and works with the Los Angeles Conservancy.
This event is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome.

PASADENA HERITAGE CRAFTSMAN WEEKEND
In its 27th year, Pasadena Heritage will present the Annual Craftsman Weekend on Nov. 9-11 that will features house tours of notable Craftsman properties, along with bus and walking tours of the surrounding neighborhoods. Other events scheduled include a Show and Sale with exhibitors of antique and contemporary furniture and decorative arts, a silent auction, workshops and presentations. MOUNTAINS RESTORATION TRUST AT SIERRA CLUB
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents Mountains Restoration Trust on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.
The Mountains Restoration Trust is committed to working in partnership with the community to preserve, protect and enhance the natural resources of the Santa Monica Mountains for the benefit of the environment and for present and future generations through land acquisition and conservation easements, habitat preservation and research and preservation. A slide show and commentary will enhance the community’s understanding of this important legacy; all are invited.
The program begins following news of conservation and outings. This is a free program and everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

FALL SHOP NIGHT COMING
The La Cañada Junior Women’s Club will host its Fall Shop Night on Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. This fun-filled event will feature local stores and vendors in the 1300 to 1500 blocks of Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada Flintridge. Refreshments will be served. The Juniors are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose philanthropic efforts support Mending Kids, which provides critical surgical care for sick children.

LOCAL E-WASTE COLLECTION PLANNED
Community Life/First Baptist Church is hosting a free E-Waste Collection Day on Saturday, Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enter the parking lot from Mary or from Community streets. The Arion Global Inc. (323) 418-2266 is accepting computers, monitors, TVs, cellphones, mp3 players, ink & toner cartridges, printers, microwaves, cables & wires, laptops and all other electronics. The food pantry, Sue’s Garden, will get a financial contribution based on the number of items collected that have a recycling fee.
Items not acceptable are: light bulbs, alkaline batteries, smoke detectors or hazardous waste.

SWEET ADELINES AT FOREST LAWN
The RiverOaks chapter of Sweet Adelines International presents “CLUEless, a Musical Mystery” featuring Detective “Sherlock Tones,” his assistant “Whatsong,” the award-winning Troubadour Quartet; guest quartet “Trouble;” and lots of intrigue, humor and barbershop-style music. ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS
Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This new series will mark the beginning of the 18th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike and explores the histories of composers and their music. The topic for this new series is “Musicals in the 20th Century.”
The 10-week series of classes continues every Tuesday through Dec. 4 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE S-T BRANCH LIBRARY
The Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga Library bookstore, located in the lobby of the library, has books that range in topics from travel, sports, and education to psychology and biographies. The store also has CDs, DVDs and records. Prices range from 10 cents to $3. Currently, children’s books and cookbooks are on sale for 10 cents (excluding special editions). LOVE TO SING?

FREE STROKE SUPPORT GROUP, AND HEART LECTURE
A stroke support group hosted by Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center meets the second Tuesday of each month from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Rehabilitation Conference Room on the third floor of the hospital.
The support group is open to caregivers, family members, friends and stroke survivors and will help with communication, education, and coping styles while building friendships, solving problems and sharing resources and experience.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY
The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).
Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m. This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
