The Glendale Youth Orchestra, conducted by Brad Keimach, performs its opening concert of the 30th anniversary season on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. at the historic Alex Theatre in Glendale. The program will feature the Beethoven Coriolan Overture; Schubert Symphony No. 8 (“Unfinished”); Ravel Tzigane, for solo violin and orchestra, Rachel Mugemancuro, violin (Pasadena; Havard-Westlake High School); Mozart Symphony No. 35 (“Haffner”).

The GYO is funded in part by a grant from the LA County Arts Commission. The concert is supported in part by a grant from the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts.

Formed in 1989 by a group of Glendale music lovers and school teachers, the Glendale Youth Orchestra now attracts talented young musicians in grades six through 12 and college music programs from all over Los Angeles and the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys. Keimach is a graduate of New York’s prestigious Juilliard School. Keimach studied conducting with the legendary Leonard Bernstein and holds an MFA from the Purchase Conservatory of the State University of New York.

Mugemancuro is a ninth grade student at Harvard-Westlake. She started playing the violin 10 years ago and currently studies with Mihaela Ganea King. She has performed in multiple venues across the United States and was featured with Lang Lang on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” in 2012. She has been a member of the Glendale Youth Orchestra for six years.

The GYO’s mission is based on the belief that young people have a better chance of succeeding in their world if they appreciate and participate in its rich artistic and cultural traditions. GYO provides young musicians in grades six through college with a unique opportunity to play classical music under the direction of a Juilliard trained conductor.

Tickets are $15 and may be purchased from the Alex Theatre box office. Students, children and seniors may purchase tickets for $12 each. Groups of 15 or more get 15% off.
