BOOK SIGNING AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

On Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse is hosting a booksigning with writer Jeff Sherratt, author of “Detour to Murder,” a Jimmy O’Brien mystery novel.

Soon after its release, Sherratt’s first novel, The Brimstone Murders (2008) became the bestselling book of all time For Echelon Press. The second, Guilty Or Else (2009) was nominated for the Left Coast Crime Panik Award. Sherratt has written nonfiction articles for corporate newsletters and his short stores have been published in H2O Magazine and the anthology, The Heat Of The Moment. He is a past board member of Sisters in Crime/L.A., and currently a member of Mystery Writers of America. He has been a speaker at many book events including libraries, various California prisons, and he was the guest speaker at the prestigious Southern California Writers Conference.

The Verdugo Hills YMCA  is hosting Family Fun Pumpkin Carving Night this Friday, Oct. 29 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. All are invited to join the fun at the Verdugo Hills Family YMCA that will include a pizza dinner, beverages, dessert, two pumpkins per family, pumpkin carving patterns and carving utensils.

LEISURE CLUB HOSTING DEITLEIN

The Glendale Center Theater, the longest, continually operating theater in the country is now celebrating its 64th anniversary. Tim Dietlein, owner/executive producer of the Glendale Center Theater (his grandparents established the theater) will be making a presentation about the history and operation of that theater at the November meeting of the Leisure Club of La Cañada Flintridge.

WORKSHOP ON BUYING FORECLOSURES

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC

Glendale Noon Concerts is a free admission concert series taking place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10-12:40 p.m. in the newly restored chapel and sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Glendale (downtown at Louise & Wilson, no religious affiliation). On Nov. 3, The Malkin-Trybek Duo: mezzo-soprano Iris Malkin  and guitarist Edward Trybek will be performing Spanish works by Rodrigo, Sor & Cordero and Sephardic songs.

PATRONS’ CLUB ANNOUNCES FASHION SHOW PLANS

The Patrons’ Club of Glendale Community College is holding its annual scholarship fashion show/luncheon/silent auction on Friday, Nov. 5, commencing at 11:30 a.m. at The Castaway Restaurant, 1250 Harvard Road in Burbank.

LECTURE SERIES DUE TO BEGIN

Friends of the Gamble House lecture series begins with “Patterns for a Movement: The Arts & Crafts in England and Scotland” presented by current Gamble House curator Anne Mallek, set to take place on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 4:00 p.m. at the Ahmanson Auditorium at Art Center College of Design. The lecture is free to Friends of the Gamble House (FOGH) members and $12 to the general public.

Advance tickets for the entire FOGH lecture series are $40 for the general public (they are free to FOGH members). Other series lectures include author Ericka Esau on “The Transcontinental Bungalow: From Pasadena to Australia,” Jan. 15, 2011; Pasadena artist Kenton Nelson on March 12; and writer David Weinstein on “Joseph Eichler and his Architects: The Men Behind Eichler Homes,” on May 16.

PLASTIC SURGERY OPTIONS TOPIC AT VHH

Verdugo Hills Hospital (VHH) will hold a free community lecture on plastic and reconstructive surgery, “Reversing the Clock with Plastic Surgery: Options and Outcomes.” The lecture, given by Dr. Vladimir Grigoryants, will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 10 from 7-8 p.m. in the hospital’s Council Room, located on the fourth floor lobby.

Topics discussed will include the safety of plastic surgery and a review of commonly performed plastic surgery procedures. The lecture is part of the hospital’s Physician Lecture Series.

Dr. Grigoryants is a board certified plastic surgeon specializing in cosmetic surgery of the face and body. He has received numerous awards for his research contributions in the field of surgery and was selected as one of the top surgeons in 2009 by the Consumer’s Research Council of America.

FOREST LAWN PRESENTS VETERANS DAY PROGRAM

Forest Lawn – Hollywood Hills is presenting its 51st Annual Veterans Day Program on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. Serving as master of ceremonies is long-time KTLA-TV anchor and World War II veteran Stan Chambers, while the event’s keynote speaker will be Master Sergeant Kanessa Trent, principle advisor and public affairs sergeant major for U.S. Forces-Afghanistan and the International Security Assistance Force in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.  The Veterans Day program will open with an aerial performance by the Golden Stars Skydiving Team, and will also include a commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, and patriotic musical performances by renowned soloist Robbie Britt, as well as the Notre Dame Irish Knight High School Marching Band.

The program takes place at The Forecourt of the Birth of Liberty Mosaic, Forest Lawn-Hollywood Hills, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive.  This is no charge to attend.

LEONIS ADOBE SUBJECT OF TALK

On Saturday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m. the Little Landers Historical Society will host a presentation about Leonis Adobe.  The program will be held at the Bolton Hall Museum and will begin with a DVD explaining the history of the Leonis Adobe, then docents from Leonis Adobe will show the contents in their “Traveling Trunk.” Through artifacts, photographs and oral history, attendees will experience the life and culture of the inhabitants of Leonis Adobe and the Plummer house during the 1880s. This program is free to the public. Everyone is welcome.

FLINTRIDGE BOOKS TO HOST AUTHOR

Flintridge Books and Coffeehouse is hosting The Art of the Short Story – A Reading and Workshop with Leslie Parry on Sunday, Nov. 14, from 3 – 5:00 p.m.

The author will share one of her short stories, then lead a 30-minute mini-writing exercise followed by individual readings of completed projects and a Q&A (participation is free). BABYSITTING CLASSES FOR KIDS BEING HELD

The Verdugo Hills Hospital BEGINNINGS Family Education Program offers babysitting classes designed for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 15. The babysitting class is an interactive course that teaches participants valuable skills, including infant/child CPR, basic first aid, home/auto safety, accident prevention, telephone skills, safety tips, when to call 911, poison control, fire/earthquake plans and other helpful childcare advice. Upon completion of the course, participants will receive a babysitting course completion certificate.

Upcoming babysitting classes are being held on Nov. 20 and Dec. 11. Each class is a single, one-time class, held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Classes are offered at VHH, located at 1812 Verdugo Blvd. in Glendale in the Council Room (located on the fourth floor).

CVHS CHORAL ALUMS WANTED

Former members of choral groups at Crescenta Valley High School are invited to take part in the CVHS Alumni Chorale. The group, composed of CVHS choral alumni men and women, rehearse once a week on Wednesdays from 7:15 p.m. – 9:15 p.m., at the Glendale First United Methodist Church. The group performs for local civic groups and retirement homes in Pasadena, Glendale, La Crescenta, Montrose and Duarte during the holiday season and again in the late spring/early summer. After the holiday season performances the group will resume rehearsals in the middle of January 2011.
