It’s usually an annual showcase of the men showing up and proving who’s boss, but at this year’s CVHS varsity versus alumni game, it was the younger Falcons who earned their wings.

The boys’ varsity basketball team survived the usual physical pounding from the alumni but proved to be a step faster when it beat the alumni 72-71 in the CVHS gymnasium on Nov. 21. The alumni were without one of its stars, 2003 CV grad Jimmy Goffredo, but had plenty of firepower with Matt Oliver, Eric Strangis and Cole Currie, a 2013 alum playing in his first game of this sort.

Currie gave the alumni a 71-70 with a late basket, but subsequently fouled varsity’s Tyler Carlson on the next play. Carlson sank both free throws with just seconds left and Oliver’s desperate heave from near half-court fell short as time expired. The varsity was led by the strong play of Carlson, guard Andreyas Boghosian and center Harout Tahanian.

The Falcons play this week in the Northeast Valley Varsity Tournament, which goes until Saturday, and then begins Pacific League play at Hoover High School on Dec. 4 at 5 p.m.
