The Rosemont Middle School seventh grade boys celebrate their first-place team finish.

On Dec. 8, 29 runners from the Rosemont Middle School cross-country team participated in the annual LA84 Foundation Run 4 Fun at Jesse Owens Stadium at Cal State Los Angeles. An estimated 500 middle-school runners participated in the event.

The Spartans started out strong.

The Spartans placed very well, despite having fewer runners than many other schools. Led by Ater Prather and Michael Hebert, who took fourth and fifth place in their age group, Rosemont’s seventh-grade boys’ team took first place. Harrison Connors came in third in the eighth grade boys’ division, leading his group to a second place overall finish. The seventh-grade Spartan girls also took second place in the team competition. The eighth-grade girls failed to place, primarily because they did not have the requisite five runners needed to qualify for a team score.

Led by the dedication of coaches Chris Davis, Harriet Hayes and Sherry Owens, the team practiced two days a week for the past three months in preparation for the 1.2-mile race held on the Cal State LA campus.

Harrison Connors finished third out of 127 runners.
