GUEST SPEAKER AT KIWANIS CLUB GLENDALE

Gary Shaffer, director of the Glendale Library, Arts & Culture center, is the guest speaker at the Feb. 15 meeting of the Kiwanis Club Glendale.

Guests are welcome at the lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meeting starts at noon.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado Blvd. in Glendale.

 

VERDUGO HUUT ANTI-VALENTINE

The Verdugo HUUT at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills celebrates its first anniversary on Saturday, Feb. 16 with a show brimming with musicians, storytellers and even a puppet version of “Antony and Cleopatra.” “Mistakes Were Made: A Post-Valentine’s Spectacular” will be presented in the 100-seat performance venue. Tickets are $10.

TOASTMASTERS NEWS

Learn the art of public speaking at Foothills Community Toastmasters. The club meets every Monday in February at the home of Richard and Susan Steward, 10700 Hillrose Circle in Sunland. A speech contest is on Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.; on Feb. 25 is an open house and potluck at 6:30 p.m. A special event is on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with Coffee and Sweet Talk Speakathon at Starbucks, 8241 Foothill Blvd. in Sunland.

Guests are always welcome at no charge.

 

AAUW JOINT MEETING

On Saturday, Feb. 16 the Pasadena branch of the American Association of University Women will be joined at its general meeting by the Glendale branch of the AAUW. The guest speaker will be a new member of the Pasadena branch, Nan Johnson, retiree from the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, where she taught courses in women and the law and women in politics and where she founded the Susan B. Anthony Center. 

Luncheon is at 11:30 a.m. and is $25 per person. It will be held at the Women’s City Club, 160 N. Oakland in Pasadena.

HEALTH FAIR AT ST. DOMINIC’S

St. Dominic Catholic Church in Eagle Rock is hosting a health fair on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Free screenings, health information giveaways, raffle, children’s games and light refreshments. Among the participants are members of USC Verdugo Hills Hospital, Adventist Health-Glendale and Dignity Health-Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center.

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC

Glendale Noon Concerts is a free-admission concert series that takes place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10 p.m. to 12:40 p.m. in the sanctuary of Glendale City Church.

The next concert is on Feb. 20 and features violinist Johana Krejci and pianist Brendan White who will perform the Leos Janacek Violin Sonata and tangos by Astor Piazzolla and Tujunga composer Kirstin Fife.

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS

Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This is the 18th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike that explore the histories of composers and their music. The topic for this new series is “Musicals in the 20th Century” (years 1960-2000).

The 10-week series of classes began Jan. 29; classes are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and continue every Tuesday through April 2 at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

TOWNE SINGERS EXTENDS INVITATION

Love to sing? Join the Towne Singers! The Towne Singers is a non-audition choir. Male voices are needed, but all are welcome to join this family of musicians. Rehearsals for the upcoming spring concert “All The Best” began in January. The concert is scheduled for Saturday, May 11.

Rehearsals are held Mondays from 7:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1757 N. Lake Ave. in Pasadena.

‘ELEVATE YOU’ HOSTED BY HEAL WITHIN

The 7th annual Women’s 3E event takes place on June 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Castaway in Burbank. The day focuses on “cooperation, genuine connections and powerful self-reflection.” There will be guest speakers, guided visualization and more. Tickets are $99 until March 1, $145 after. FREE DANCE CLASSES AT SUNLAND REC CENTER

The community is invited to take part in free Tuesday night dance classes at Sunland Recreation Center. Dances include Zumba, hip-hop and swing. No prior knowledge or experience required.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick up large donations. Call the library at (818) 352-4481 to schedule a pick-up.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
