On Saturday, Nov. 13, the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church will be hosting a large, charitable fundraising event known as an “Empty Bowls” event, which melds the causes of the arts and charity. The fundraiser will feature a collection of handmade bowls crafted by a wide variety of individuals from around the community, ranging from church members to Crescenta Valley students. The throwing of the bowls has been supervised by trained potters and has been in the works for months in preparation for this Saturday.

All who attend will not only receive a bowl in exchange for a $15 donation, but also soup and bread, which, like the ceramic works, have been made and donated by both local restaurants and individual volunteers. Attendees will be treated to live music while they eat and door prizes will also be available. In addition, a silent auction will be held, which will feature items such as gift certificates to the local contributing restaurants.

The Empty Bowls project has been in operation since the early 1990s. Over the years these events have been organized by several different charities in countries around the world and have even been implemented by the United Nations as part of their World Food Day. Then, as now, the object was to raise money for charity, along with awareness about world hunger and arts education.
