DEMO CLUB TO HEAR LOCAL
CHINA EXPERT
Former diplomat, China affairs expert, and now investment analyst specializing in Asia, La Cañada resident David P. Loevinger will be the featured speaker at the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club meeting on Sunday, March 17 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living, 4845 Dunsmore Ave., La Crescenta.
With China of great topical interest, Loevinger, who had worked previously in financial affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing among many other government diplomatic positions, will have a unique perspective to share.
Club business will include a vote on whether to help defray some expenses for the two club members who have been named delegates to the Democratic State Central Committee Convention in San Francisco at the end of May. Those delegates are Lora de la Portilla, nominated by State Senator Anthony Portantino, and Susan Mastrodemos, nominated by Assemblywoman Laura Friedman.

BIONIC BOOMERS – JOINT REPLACEMENT

ANNUAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL
On March 17 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., 16 visiting tea masters and students from Japan will lead three public tea ceremonies at the Shoseian Tea House and Friendship Garden in Brand Park, Glendale. Dancers will also be visiting from Japan to demonstrate a typical festival dance called awa odori. There will be three food trucks just outside the Garden, and some great food selections inside the Garden as well. Live music performances, including the Japanese harp (koto), the Japanese guitar (shamisen), and the always awesome Taiko drummers will also be performing.
This will include a celebration of the completion of the interior tea house renovation project … feat that has lasted over 15 year.
Entrance to this event is free – there is a requested $20 donation per person for any of the tea ceremonies.
Friends of Shoseian is a non-profit organization; contributions can be tax deductible under IRC Section 170.
There is no RSVP needed – seating for the tea ceremonies will be first come, first served.
NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC
Glendale Noon Concerts is a free-admission concert series that takes place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10 p.m. to 12:40 p.m. in the sanctuary of Glendale City Church.
The next concert is on March 20 and features clarinetist James Sullivan who will perform the Leonard Bernstein “Clarinet Sonata” with pianist Brendan White, joined by violinist Jacqueline Suzuki in a performance of the trio version of “L’Histoire du Soldat” by Igor Stravinsky.

GLENDALE ART ASSOCIATION NEWS
The Glendale Art Association will have an art exhibit opening March 16 and continuing through March 24 at McGroarty Art Center. The exhibition expresses the joy and replenishing of the coming of spring created by members of the Glendale Art Association.
Opening reception, including refreshments, will be held Saturday afternoon, March 16 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
A percentage of sales will benefit a scholarship fund for the high schools in Glendale.

‘AN ARCHITECTURAL GUIDEBOOK TO LOS ANGELES’
On Sunday, March 31 at 5 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse welcomes award-winning urban walker Robert Inman. Inman and original author Robert Winter have extensively revised and edited “An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles” for a sixth edition. First published over 50 years ago by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and written by Winter and David Gebhard, both renowned architectural historians, the latest edition also has a foreword by historian Nathan Masters.
Considered a veritable bible of built LA, “An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles” is more than an effort of exploration; the guide is an outfit of discovery. The much-anticipated revision, long since a classic standard of the Los Angeles architecture, has been updated rigorously with more than 200 new entries cataloging every crease, region, and style of Los Angeles County’s metropolitan sheath, from the missions of Spanish California to present day.

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS
Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This is the 18th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike that explore the histories of composers and their music. The topic for this new series is “Musicals in the 20th Century” (years 1960-2000).
The 10-week series of classes began Jan. 29; classes are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and continue every Tuesday through April 2 at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

TASTE WITH THE SOMMS 2:
Le Petit Vendôme presents the second annual Taste with the Somms on the grounds of the historic Lanterman House estate on Sunday, April 7. The event features a unique wine and gourmet cheese pairing with some of their favorite sommeliers.
The event will be held on the patio that surrounds the 1915 landmarked Lanterman House. Visitors can enjoy their wine and stroll the patio to peer into the house, which will be open and staffed by knowledgeable docents.

MONTROSE SEARCH & RESCUE ON CV SIERRA CLUB ROSTER
The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents the Montrose Search and Rescue team of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept., on Tuesday April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.
This life-saving group prepares training for men and women for many circumstances and for every eventuality. Climbing, rappelling, with rope and mechanical systems, wilderness survival using tracking and radio directional finding, winter rescue techniques and trail and terrain familiarization and always with patient care are only some of the all-important training for rescue.

WORLD ART DAY
Becky and Randy Mate will again host their annual Community Art & Chocolate celebration as part of World Art Day festivities on April 15. This year’s free garden potluck party will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Displays will include attendees’ art, an open mic, a barbecue, a Kids’ Table and The Great Art Trade. Last year, the Mates collected art for trade on a table where departing guests could choose which art to take home. Many paintings and other works changed hands.

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.
All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS
The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).
Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y
The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m. This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.
The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
