SCHOOL ART ON KIWANIS CLUB GLENDALE ROSTER

Joan Zierhut will be the guest speaker at the March 22 meeting of the Kiwanis Club Glendale. She will be making a presentation on the art program at Mark Keppel Elementary School.

Guests are welcome at the lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meeting starts at noon.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado Blvd. in Glendale.

FREE ORIGAMI CLASS FOR KIDS
AND ADULTS

Children age 8 and up and grown-ups are invited to learn the Japanese art of origami at a free activity hosted by the Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills on Saturday, March 23, from 11 a.m. to noon. All materials are supplied free of charge.

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH CELEBRATED AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

Beginning the last week of March and throughout April, Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse celebrates National Poetry Month (April) with five special events.

Flintridge Bookstore will host the first of five readings on March 24 with a reading honoring a century of poet, radical, publisher, and booksmith Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

This legendary personality, who opened the iconic City Lights Bookstore in

San Francisco in 1953 turns 100 on Sunday, March 24. At 4 p.m. on that day, local poets Marcielle Brandler, Don Kingfisher Campbell, Bill Cushing, Kitty Kroger and Gobind Tanaka commemorate Ferlinghetti with a program including his poetry as well as their original work.

POETS DOBREER AND KAHN TO

The Village Poets of Sunland-Tujunga announced that poets Peggy Dobreer and Mandy Kahn are slated to co-feature on Sunday, March 24 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Bolton Hall Museum. Poets: sign-up for the open mic upon arrival.

GLENDALE ART ASSOCIATION NEWS

The Glendale Art Association will have an art exhibit opening March 16 and continuing through March 24 at McGroarty Art Center. The exhibition expresses the joy and replenishing of the coming of spring created by members of the Glendale Art Association.

Opening reception, including refreshments, will be held Saturday afternoon, March 16 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

A percentage of sales will benefit a scholarship fund for the high schools in Glendale.

FIBROMYALGIA/ARTHRITIS SUPPORT GROUP

The regular meeting of fibromyalgia/arthritis support group will take place on Wednesday, March 27 from 1 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. in the library at La Cañada Presbyterian Church. People wanting personal and social support, and education are welcome. Discussion will be held regarding latest research information and positive applicable techniques for lifestyle management of these difficult medical issues.

Dianne Whiting, MA, PT and Katie Phillips-Rector, MS, MFT, lead the support group. Both women have extensive experience in these medical areas and are passionate about helping others to find strength and encouragement while living with these chronic issues.

HOME TOUR PLANNED

Pasadena Heritage presents its 2019 spring home tour Historic Homes & Gorgeous Gardens on March 31. It is a self-driving tour featuring examples of noteworthy architecture and landscape design. There will also be a lecture by Busch Garden historian Michael Logan prior to the tour on Thursday, March 28.

The tour is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; advance tickets may be purchased for $43 for non-members, $38 for members. On the day of the home tour, tickets are $48.

‘AN ARCHITECTURAL GUIDEBOOK TO LOS ANGELES’

On Sunday, March 31 at 5 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse welcomes award-winning urban walker Robert Inman. Inman and original author Robert Winter have extensively revised and edited “An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles” for a sixth edition. First published over 50 years ago by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and written by Winter and David Gebhard, both renowned architectural historians, the latest edition also has a foreword by historian Nathan Masters.

Considered a veritable bible of built LA, “An Architectural Guidebook to Los Angeles” is more than an effort of exploration; the guide is an outfit of discovery. The much-anticipated revision, long since a classic standard of the Los Angeles architecture, has been updated rigorously with more than 200 new entries cataloging every crease, region, and style of Los Angeles County’s metropolitan sheath, from the missions of Spanish California to present day.

ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS

Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This is the 18th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike that explore the histories of composers and their music. The topic for this new series is “Musicals in the 20th Century” (years 1960-2000).

The 10-week series of classes began Jan. 29; classes are from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and continue every Tuesday through April 2 at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

The cost for the 10-week series is $90. Everyone is welcome!

‘IT’S ALL ABOUT JAZZ!’

The Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic will feature the Dave Siebels Trio at its 71st annual Scholarship Benefit Luncheon on Saturday, April 6. Dave Siebels is a local resident and well-known composer, arranger, keyboardist and record producer.

The event will be held at Oakmont Country Club, 3100 Country Club Drive in Glendale, beginning at 11 a.m. Reservations are $75 per attendee and includes lunch, one raffle ticket and valet parking. Since 1948, the Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic, a 501(c) (3) public charity, has been providing financial assistance to local area young women. Scholarship recipients are young women in the Burbank, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Montrose, Sunland and Tujunga area. Scholarships are awarded to high school senior women who will attend a four-year college/university in the fall and also to active National Panhellenic Conference sorority member undergraduates.

TASTE WITH THE SOMMS 2:

Le Petit Vendôme presents the second annual Taste with the Somms on the grounds of the historic Lanterman House estate on Sunday, April 7. The event features a unique wine and gourmet cheese pairing with some of their favorite sommeliers. 

The event will be held on the patio that surrounds the 1915 landmarked Lanterman House. Visitors can enjoy their wine and stroll the patio to peer into the house, which will be open and staffed by knowledgeable docents.

MONTROSE SEARCH & RESCUE ON CV SIERRA CLUB ROSTER

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents the Montrose Search and Rescue team of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept., on Tuesday April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

This life-saving group prepares training for men and women for many circumstances and for every eventuality. Climbing, rappelling, with rope and mechanical systems, wilderness survival using tracking and radio directional finding, winter rescue techniques and trail and terrain familiarization and always with patient care are only some of the all-important training for rescue.

MARK IT WITH A STONE

The speaker at the next Little Landers historical and educational program is Craig Durst, The History Hunter. He will take the audience for a trip down Foothill Boulevard like none other. He will introduce notable points of interest not otherwise known and after this presentation, Foothill Boulevard will never seem the same again.

This program is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome. It takes place on   Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall Museum in Tujunga. Parking is available a few doors uphill at the Elks Lodge.

GHS PRESENTS VICTORIAN EASTER

The Glendale Historical Society is hosting a Victorian Easter at the Doctors House Museum on Sunday, April 14. Festivities will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and include a children’s egg hunt on the rolling lawns of the Doctors House Museum (children should bring their own basket to collect eggs), traditional Victorian games and more.

WORLD ART DAY

Becky and Randy Mate will again host their annual Community Art & Chocolate celebration as part of World Art Day festivities on April 15. This year’s free garden potluck party will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Displays will include attendees’ art, an open mic, a barbecue, a Kids’ Table and The Great Art Trade. Last year, the Mates collected art for trade on a table where departing guests could choose which art to take home. Many paintings and other works changed hands.

   Those who cannot attend are welcome to submit Mail Art that will be on display.

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
