LEARNING ABOUT GLENDALE LIBRARY EXHIBIT SPACE

Anahid Oshagan will be speaking at the April 5 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale. She will be speaking on the exhibit space ReflectSpace.

Guests are welcome at the lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meeting starts at noon.

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH CELEBRATED AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

Throughout April, Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse celebrates National Poetry Month with special events.

Today, April 4 at 4 p.m., Moonday Poetry Series features Suzanne Lummis, the 2018/19 COLA (City of Los Angeles) award winner and fellow. Her poetry has been published in The New Yorker magazine and many literary journals.

NEXT MEETING OF PACIFIC CAMELLIA SOCIETY

The Pacific Camellia Society is having its next club meeting is today, Thursday, April 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Descanso Gardens (Birch Room).

Dr. Bradford King, editor of  “Camellia Journal,” the internationally acclaimed publication of the American Camellia Society, who also lives locally, will be making a PowerPoint color presentation on “Old Timers – Tried and True Camellias.”

Dr. King will also be giving the main program, which will be a PowerPoint tour of camellia gardens in and around Mobile, Alabama where he attended the National Camellia Show.

FREE DANCE CLASS OFFERED

Learn how to swing dance at a free class hosted by the Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills on Saturday, April 6 from 10 a.m. until noon. The two-hour class will be taught by Vanessa Garcia, who has been studying dance at Cal State University of Northridge for two years and has competed in six collegiate dance competitions, consistently earning top awards in various categories.

‘IT’S ALL ABOUT JAZZ!’

The Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic will feature the Dave Siebels Trio at its 71st annual Scholarship Benefit Luncheon on Saturday, April 6. Dave Siebels is a local resident and well-known composer, arranger, keyboardist and record producer.

The event will be at the Oakmont Country Club, 3100 Country Club Drive in Glendale, beginning at 11 a.m. Reservations are $75 per attendee and includes lunch, one raffle ticket and valet parking. SPRINGTACULAR – A DAY AT THE RACES

Springtacular – A Day at the Races is a fundraiser at 11 a.m. on Sunday,  April 7 at Santa Anita Race Track Club  – Court A hosted by Las Caritas, an auxiliary of Assistance League Glendale.

The buffet fundraiser will help Las Caritas’ philanthropic outreach
projects including the Glendale Unified School District food bank, hygiene kits for students dressed by Operation School Bell and the homeless shelter programs at Ascencia including providing Christmas gifts for children living at the shelter.

The $80 Springtacular ticket includes a buffet luncheon, the racing program, including access to races and “track handicapper,” and parking at Santa Anita Race Track. Also included for event attendees will be a silent auction with 87 items and other games.

‘A ROMP THROUGH THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION’

The award-winning troupe The Pennyroyals will be performing “A
Romp Through the American Revolution” on Sunday April 7 at 4 pm. at Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills.

This colorful musical theatre presents authentic theatrical and musical moments from the American Revolution and features comedy, period costumes, vocals and instruments – all in one hour!

PASADENA WALK FOR KIDS

More than 750 supporters are expected to take part in the annual Pasadena Ronald McDonald House Walk for Kids on Sunday, April 7. The fundraiser aims to raise $165,000 for programs supporting families who must travel outside their communities to access medical treatment at local hospitals for their critically ill children.

TASTE WITH THE SOMMS 2:

Le Petit Vendôme presents the second annual Taste with the Somms
on the grounds of the Lanterman House on Sunday, April 7. The event features a unique wine and gourmet cheese pairing with some of their favorite sommeliers. 

The event will be held on the patio that surrounds the 1915 landmarked Lanterman House. Visitors can enjoy their wine and stroll the patio to peer into the house, which will be open and staffed by knowledgeable docents.

Tickets are $50 per person for the event. All profits of the event will
benefit the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge and the Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation.  Purchase tickets at www.cclcf.org.

MONTROSE SEARCH & RESCUE ON CV SIERRA CLUB ROSTER

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents the Montrose Search and Rescue team of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept., on Tuesday April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

This life-saving group prepares training for men and women for many circumstances and for every eventuality. Climbing, rappelling, with rope and mechanical systems, wilderness survival using tracking and radio directional finding, winter rescue techniques and trail and terrain familiarization and always with patient care are only some of the all-important training for rescue.

APRIL DOC TALK LECTURE

SCREENING PLANNED

Gather, Inspire and Act and the Montrose Peace Vigil present “Positive Youth” on Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m. at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church. “Believer” documents the efforts to organize a festival in support of LGBTQ youth in Utah by Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons. Concerned by the high suicide rate among teens in the state and the unaccepting policies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Reynolds chose to become an ally to the gay community. He uses the platform of a rock star to amplify the voices of LGBTQ youth and their family members.

The film is energized by the rousing hits of Imagine Dragons  “Believer” and “Thunder.”

TOUR OF 710/MARKHAM PLACE NEIGHBORHOOD

On Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., Pasadena Heritage hosts a walking tour of the Governor Markham Landmark District, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the City of Pasadena. In the path of the long-debated 710 Freeway extension, this neighborhood has been threatened for decades and many of the homes have been owned by Caltrans for years. The demise of plans for a tunnel, announced at the end of 2018, means that these homes might be sold and this historic neighborhood returned to livability. Hear the latest on the freeway fight while enjoying the distinctive architecture on this walk.

Tours include exteriors only. Starting locations and parking information will be available upon purchase of tickets. Price is $20 for nonmembers, $18 for members.

AAUW MEETS

The Glendale Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will meet on Saturday, April 13 at 9 a.m. The brunch meeting will be held at the Oakmont Country Club. The speaker on April 13 will be Diana Loomis. She is an actress and artist who is also a local historian. She will speak about Guy Rose, a famous impressionist painter from the San Gabriel Valley. Rose was a neighbor of Claude Monet, and his paintings now sell for over $1 million.

ANNUAL CALTECH JAZZ FESTIVAL

The Caltech jazz band will present its 19th Annual Caltech Jazz Festival on Saturday, April 13 from 1 p.m. to 6 pm. at Gates Annex Patio on the Caltech campus, just west of Dabney Lounge. It is open to the public and performers will include The Jimmy Branly Trio featuring Andy Langham and Edwin Livingston, Amanda Hamilton Group CSUN Award Winning Combo, and The Caltech jazz band directed by Barb Catlin.

Food and beverages will be available for sale. The audience is welcome to bring a lawn chair or blanket, and food and beverages.

MARK IT WITH A STONE

The speaker at the next Little Landers historical and educational program is Craig Durst, The History Hunter. He will take the audience for a trip down Foothill Boulevard like none other. He will introduce notable points of interest not otherwise known and after this presentation, Foothill Boulevard will never seem the same again.

This program is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome. It takes place on   Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. at Bolton Hall Museum in Tujunga. Parking is available a few doors uphill at the Elks Lodge.

GHS PRESENTS VICTORIAN EASTER

The Glendale Historical Society is hosting a Victorian Easter at the Doctors House Museum on Sunday, April 14. Festivities will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and include a children’s egg hunt on the rolling lawns of the Doctors House Museum (children should bring their own basket to collect eggs), traditional Victorian games and more.

WORLD ART DAY

Becky and Randy Mate will again host their annual Community Art & Chocolate celebration as part of World Art Day festivities on April 15. This year’s free garden potluck party will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Displays will include attendees’ art, an open mic, a barbecue, a Kids’ Table and The Great Art Trade. Last year, the Mates collected art for trade on a table where departing guests could choose which art to take home. Many paintings and other works changed hands.

   Those who cannot attend are welcome to submit Mail Art that will be on display.

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC

LCWC MOTHERS’ DAY TEA & FASHION SHOW

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
