Local Families Benefit from ALF

Local families in need have been the focus of the community outreach committee of the Assistance League of Flintridge (ALF). The committee identifies areas of need and provides items and services funded by ALF Bargain Box Thrift Shop revenue.

In December, the committee filled shopping carts with toys for foster children who attend Sunland and Tujunga elementary schools. In January, these children also received a book chosen especially for them and giftwrapped.   This was coordinated with help from Once Upon A Time bookstore in Montrose.

ALF community outreach members prepared, served and dined with residents of Door of Hope, a non-profit organization whose mission is to help families experiencing homelessness by providing a safe place to live, counseling, financial training and other services. Door of Hope parents who are attending college classes were presented with computers to encourage and assist them in their efforts. Books were given to foster children and to children at the Door of Hope as ALF’s participation in National Assistance League Action Week.

ALF members have recently launched a drive to collect household supplies for Door of Hope.

At the ALF March meeting, Megan Katerjian, Door of Hope executive director, was introduced. She described the organization’s successful program and thanked ALF members for their support.

ALF community outreach committee members include Mary Carney, Mary Mieding, Jan Di Bias, Jan Lowe, Leasa Sugimura, Toni Bird, Joyce Goodsell, Susan Huntsman, Sue Sheedy, Linda Deacon, Cynthia Ringel and Chairman Barbara Weber.
