NATIONAL POETRY MONTH CELEBRATED AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

Throughout April, Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse celebrates National Poetry Month with special events.

On Thursday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m., Nare Garibyan will read selections from her book “When Ruins Speak: A Journey of Poems.” These poems chronicle the poet’s

journey to her lost homeland, in search of a connection to the land of her ancestors, now in ruin. Her travels take her to Western Armenia, present-day Eastern Turkey. They are written in an attempt to resuscitate the belief of empathic survival in a tumultuous world.

LCVRWF HOSTS LUNCHEON

The La Crescenta Valley Republican Women’s Federated is hosting a luncheon today, Thursday, April 11 at the Oakmont Country Club. Social hour begins at 11 a.m. followed by meeting/lunch/speaker at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $30.

SCREENING PLANNED

Gather, Inspire and Act and the Montrose Peace Vigil present “Positive Youth” on Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m. at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church. “Believer” documents the efforts to organize a festival in support of LGBTQ youth in Utah by Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons. Concerned by the high suicide rate among teens in the state and the unaccepting policies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Reynolds chose to become an ally to the gay community. He uses the platform of a rock star to amplify the voices of LGBTQ youth and their family members.

The film is energized by the rousing hits of Imagine Dragons  “Believer” and “Thunder.”

TOUR OF 710/MARKHAM PLACE NEIGHBORHOOD

On Saturday, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., Pasadena Heritage hosts a walking tour of the Governor Markham Landmark District, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the City of Pasadena. Residences included in the District parallel Pasadena’s growth from incorporation as a city in 1886. This area became an official Landmark District in 2005 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

In the path of the long-debated 710 Freeway extension, this neighborhood has been threatened for decades and many of the homes have been owned by Caltrans for years. The demise of plans for a destructive tunnel, announced at the end of 2018, offers the promise that these homes will be sold and this historic neighborhood returned to livability. Hear the latest on the freeway fight while enjoying the distinctive architecture on this walk.

AAUW MEETS

The Glendale Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will meet on Saturday, April 13 at 9 a.m. The brunch meeting will be held at the Oakmont Country Club. Guests are always welcome at the meeting. The cost is $28/person that may be paid at the door by cash or check made payable to AAUW Glendale. 

The speaker on April 13 will be Diana Loomis. She is an actress and artist who is also a local historian. She will speak about Guy Rose, a famous impressionist painter from the San Gabriel Valley. Rose was a neighbor of Claude Monet, and his paintings now sell for over $1 million.

ANNUAL CALTECH JAZZ FESTIVAL

The Caltech jazz band will present its 19th Annual Caltech Jazz Festival on Saturday, April 13 from 1 p.m. to 6 pm. at Gates Annex Patio on the Caltech campus, just west of Dabney Lounge. It is open to the public and performers will include The Jimmy Branly Trio featuring Andy Langham and Edwin Livingston, Amanda Hamilton Group CSUN Award Winning Combo, and The Caltech jazz band directed by Barb Catlin.

MARK IT WITH A STONE

The speaker at the next Little Landers historical and educational program is Craig Durst, The History Hunter. He will take the audience for a trip down Foothill Boulevard like none other. He will introduce notable points of interest not otherwise known and after this presentation, Foothill Boulevard will never seem the same again.

’11 STEPS AHEAD’ AT ace/121

ace/121 Gallery presents “11 Steps Ahead,” an exhibition of future-forward Armenian-American visionaries.

The artists gathered represent a shared inspiration from a constant exchange of diverse ideologies and cultures in the diaspora, each having created a unique sensitivity toward a certain future in their works. Their respective mediums – visual storytelling and graphic novels, production architecture, visual art, design, and music (cello) – tell a story of integrating history into a present image of reality in order to serve the collective future. These stories are fabricated both in the visual depictions of their imagery and music as well as the use of traditional materials and media of our present day.

Participating artists: Ian Dorian (visual storyteller and graphic novelist), Sevak Petrosian (production architect and designer), Alexandre Marutian (visual artist and designer), Artyom Manukyan (cellist).

Gallery hours are Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment.

GHS PRESENTS VICTORIAN EASTER

The Glendale Historical Society is hosting a Victorian Easter at the Doctors House Museum on Sunday, April 14. Festivities will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and include a children’s egg hunt on the rolling lawns of the Doctors House Museum (children should bring their own basket to collect eggs), traditional Victorian games and more.

WORLD ART DAY

Becky and Randy Mate will again host their annual Community Art & Chocolate celebration as part of World Art Day festivities on April 15. This year’s free garden potluck party will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Displays will include attendees’ art, an open mic, a barbecue, a Kids’ Table and The Great Art Trade. Last year, the Mates collected art for trade on a table where departing guests could choose which art to take home. Many paintings and other works changed hands.

AHEAD With Horses Inc., a nonprofit that maximizes the potential of disabled, disadvantaged and special needs children by providing developmental therapy, education and recreation through horses, will hold its 38th Annual Children’s Demonstration and Fun Day on Saturday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fundraiser for the therapeutic vaulting program will feature a barbecue lunch, games, arts and crafts, music, silent auction, T-shirt sales, massage booth, face painter and special gifts for all youngsters in attendance will be available.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
