TEQUILA AND TACOS FRIEND RAISER

The Women’s Council of the USC Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation is hosting a Tequila and Tacos Friend Raiser on Friday, May 3 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funds raised will be contributed to the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit, which opened last year. The Women’s Council is soliciting funds to complete its $150,000 pledge that initiated the drive for this much-needed service at the community hospital.

FREE DANCE CLASS OFFERED

Learn how to swing dance at a free class hosted by the Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills on Saturday, May 4 from 10 a.m. until noon.

The two-hour class will be taught by Vanessa Garcia, who has been studying dance at Cal State University of Northridge for two years and has competed in six collegiate dance competitions, consistently earning top awards in various categories.

HISTORY OF LA TRAINS TOPIC OF PRESENTATION

William Bradley, author of “Los Angeles Union Station: Tracks to the Future” will speak to Book Club of California at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8 at Women’s City Club of Pasadena, 160 N. Oakland Ave. in Pasadena.

Los Angeles Union Station, opened on May 7, 1939, was the last great train station built in the United States. Intended as a grand portal to a grand Los Angeles, it was an anomaly, built at a time when America was eager to drive or fly to its chosen destinations.

Author Bradley relates a rich history of fierce battles, cultural relocation, and astounding financial risks culminating in one of California’s most important stories. Augmenting his words with vintage images, Bradley not only shares the tale of the terminal, but of the trains that rode its tracks – those 1939 tracks to the future.

SCREENING PLANNED

Gather, Inspire and Act and the Montrose Peace Vigil present “Being The Change: A New Kind Of Climate Documentary” on Friday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church.

Climate change can be an overwhelming topic. Those who believe what scientists are saying about the environmental crisis can be overwhelmed by its implications or frustrated by debates with deniers. Peter Kalmus, a climate scientist at JPL, has found a way to be effective, bypassing debates and keeping hope alive. “Being The Change: A New Kind Of Climate Documentary” tells the story of how Kalmus accomplished a reduction in consumption and how fulfilling the change has been for him and his family. His example is both inspiring and attainable for us.

RESTORATION EXPO IN GLENDALE

In celebration of National Preservation Month, The Glendale Historical Society (TGHS) is presenting its annual Restoration Expo on Saturday, May 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Glendale Civic Auditorium.

The Restoration Expo is free and open to the public and will include tours of a restored 1928 Spanish Colonial Revival home located within walking distance of the Expo.

Owners of vintage properties – from Craftsman bungalows and Period Revivals to Mid-century Modern and Ranch-style homes – will have an opportunity to obtain useful information and resources from a variety of trades to assist them in preserving the original charm and character of older homes, while still meeting the needs of modern-day living. The Expo will showcase approximately 50 exhibitor booths featuring restoration specialists and contractors, landscape and interior design professionals, period and reproduction tile, lighting and hardware suppliers, decorative and functional artists and many other valuable resources.

BILL’S BEES STORY

Little Landers Historical Society hosts speaker Bill Lewis on May 11 at 1 p.m. for the story of local beekeeping and the importance of bees in people’s lives and the things people can do to help bees flourish.

Speaker Lewis has been keeping bees and harvesting honey in the San Gabriel Mountains since 1991. He is an active member and past president of the California State Beekeepers Association.

This event is held at Bolton Hall and is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

LCWC MOTHERS’ DAY TEA & FASHION SHOW

BRUCE HALES PRESENTS ‘THE MYSTERIES OF EASTER ISLAND’

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club presents Bruce Hale’s, “The Mysteries of Easter Island” on Tuesday, May 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

Hales, a Sierra Club member and frequent presenter, will present a slide show describing his recent visit to this isolated island, now a part of Chile, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Learn about the Rapanui people who first arrived around the 5th Century. Today descendants still live on this tiny island.

LIBRARY OFFERS TIMELY AUTHOR TALK

May is Stroke Awareness Month. On May 18 at 2 p.m. the La Crescenta Library presents “Author Talk with Kimberly Basso.” Basso will read a chapter of her book, “I’m a Little Brain Dead,” a comic true tale of her stroke at the age of 44 while home alone with her young children. Her book has been well-received and nominated for several humor awards. After the reading there will be Q & A.

AHEAD WITH HORSES ANNOUNCES FUN DAY 2019

AHEAD With Horses Inc., a nonprofit that maximizes the potential of disabled, disadvantaged and special needs children by providing developmental therapy, education and recreation through horses, will hold its 38th Annual Children’s Demonstration and Fun Day on Saturday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fundraiser for the therapeutic vaulting program will feature a barbecue lunch, games, arts and crafts, music, silent auction, T-shirt sales, massage booth, face painter and special gifts for all youngsters in attendance will be available.

Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door (tickets include the barbecue lunch): $14/adults, $7/children and kids under 3 are free.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
