GLENDALE KIWANIS PRESENTS SCHOLARSHIPS

Kiwanians Karen Swan and Lisa Brooks will present the Glendale Kiwanis Scholarship Awards program on Friday, May 17 at the lunch meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Glendale. Guests are welcome at the lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meeting starts at noon.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado Blvd. in Glendale.

FREE DRUG EDUCATION TALK OFFERED IN MONTROSE

The truth about drugs is the topic of a free informal talk hosted by the Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills on Saturday, May 18 from 11 a.m. until noon. Marijuana, as well as other addictive drugs such as alcohol, tobacco and vapes, will be discussed.

The talk will be given by Randy Ferman, father of three and a veteran Scout leader, based on the free materials provided by the Foundation for a Drug-Free World.

All youth (age 11 & up) are welcome, as well as parents, teachers, Scout and other youth leaders. (This talk meets the Scouts BSA Second Class Rank requirement #7c for participating in a program on the dangers of using drugs, alcohol, tobacco and other practices which can be harmful to one’s health.)

VERDUGO HUUT PRESENTS FUN, FRIVOLITY

Each month the Verdugo HUUT (pronounced “hoot”) hosts a different, theme-based salon/hootenanny/variety show bringing musicians, comedians, and surprises to the sanctuary of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Verdugo Hills (UUVerdugo).

On Saturday night, May 18, the HUUT presents “I Gave My Love A [Redacted],” an evening of breakup songs, frivolity and other compelling entertainments. There is powerful coffee available and even cookies and a fun quiz with prizes.

Tickets are $10 and the show begins at 7 p.m. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

NEW LEADERS FOR THE AAUW

The Pasadena branch of the American Association of University Women will welcome new leadership for the year ahead at the Women’s City Club, 160 N. Oakland Ave., on Saturday May 18. New officers will be installed, including Pat Rees and Vera Mae Walsh as co-presidents. Check-in is at 11:30 a.m., lunch is $25 per person.

ANNUAL A.V.S.A. JUDGED SHOW

The Montrose African Violet Society is having its annual A.V.S.A. Judged Show & Sale on Saturday May 18 from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Descanso Gardens (Van de Kamp Hall). There will be African violets, other plants and supplies available for sale and an educational exhibit with literature on how to grow and care for African violets. Members can answer any questions on-site.

This event is free and open to the public. There is an admission fee to the gardens.

LIBRARY OFFERS TIMELY AUTHOR TALK

May is Stroke Awareness Month. On May 18 at 2 p.m. the La Crescenta Library presents “Author Talk with Kimberly Basso.” Basso will read a chapter of her book, “I’m a Little Brain Dead,” a comic true tale of her stroke at the age of 44 while home alone with her young children. Her book has been well-received and nominated for several humor awards. After the reading there will be Q & A.

Refreshments will be served. The program is free to attend.

‘MELT PERFORMANCE’ AND ‘SHIPWRECKERS’ AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

On Saturday, May 18 at 2 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse is holding a pre-release booksigning for Scott Peterson and Joshua Pruett, authors of the middle school title, “Shipwreckers: The Curse Of The Cursed Temple Of Curses Or, We Nearly Died. A Lot.”

Scott Peterson, the dashing Emmy-Award nominated executive producer and

‘LET’S TALK: MEDICARE FOR ALL’

Dr. Bill Honigman, a longtime emergency room physician from Orange County, will speak at the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club meeting on Sunday, May 19 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Center for Spiritual Living. With Medicare for All a common theme among Democratic presidential candidates, Dr. Honigman will explain how it would work. He is a leading advocate for this healthcare idea and is prepared to answer questions.

Dr. Honigman is currently an organizer for the grassroots group Progressive Democrats of America, acting as California state coordinator and Orange County chapter leader, and is a coordinator for PDA’s national Healthcare Human Rights Issue Organizing Team. He is also a member of the Steering Committee for Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) California.

Among other business at the meeting, a “straw poll” will be taken: if the primary were today who would you vote for?

ART AND POETRY AT BOLTON HALL

The next event of the Village Poets is on Sunday, May 26 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Bolton Hall Museum in Tujunga. It features Ekphrastic Poetry Inspired by the Art of Sandy Fisher and poems by poet Pamela Shea, Sunland-Tujunga’s poet laureate, 2017-2020.

The reading will include poems inspired by Sandy Fisher’s work. Light refreshments will be served; a $3 donation is appreciated! Poets: bring your poems and sign up for the open mic upon arrival.

ace/121 Gallery presents glendaleOUT, a multi-venue LGBTQIA-based show, June 1 – July 13. The exhibit announces the existence of the Glendale queer population, that it is visible, is viable and is part of Glendale’s narrative. It also shares with Glendale and each other the stories of coming out – either to themselves, to friends, to families, in schools, at jobs, or any other way/place/moment.

FREE HIP-HOP DANCE LESSON

Learn how to hip-hop at a free class hosted by the Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills on Saturday, June 1 from 10 a.m. until noon. The two-hour class will be taught by Audrey Curtis who has choreographed a number of public hip-hop performances.

‘ELEVATE YOU’ HOSTED BY HEAL WITHIN

The 7th annual Women’s 3E event takes place on June 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Castaway in Burbank. The day focuses on “cooperation, genuine connections and powerful self-reflection.” There will be guest speakers, guided visualization and more. Tickets are $145. ATTENTION MUSIC LOVERS

Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. This is the 18th consecutive year of classes for non-musicians and musicians alike that explore the histories of composers and their music. The topic for this new series is “The Versatile Violin and Her Virtuosos.”

The 10-week series of classes begin Tuesday, June 4. Classes are from 2 p.m.  to 4 p.m. and continue every Tuesday through Aug. 6. Classes are held at the Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church cultural hall, 2700 Montrose Ave. in Montrose.

The cost for the 10-week series is $90. Everyone is welcome!

LEGENDS OF THE HOLLYWOOD FOREVER CEMETERY

Little Landers Historical Society announces the next in its series of monthly 2nd Saturday historical and educational programs. All are invited to the free presentation at Bolton Hall Museum at 1 p.m. on June 8 for the story of Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the final resting place for many of Hollywood’s most famous characters.

Guest speaker E.J. Stephens and his wife Kim have authored books about Hollywood and Southern California history. They have their own travel company and host tours of film sites throughout Southern California.

This event is open to the public and all are welcome.

AHEAD WITH HORSES ANNOUNCES FUN DAY 2019

AHEAD With Horses Inc., a nonprofit that maximizes the potential of disabled, disadvantaged and special needs children by providing developmental therapy, education and recreation through horses, will hold its 38th Annual Children’s Demonstration and Fun Day on Saturday, June 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fundraiser for the therapeutic vaulting program will feature a barbecue lunch, games, arts and crafts, music, silent auction, T-shirt sales, massage booth, face painter and special gifts for all youngsters in attendance will be available.

Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door (tickets include the barbecue lunch): $14/adults, $7/children and kids under 3 are free.

Demonstrations are from noon to 2 p.m.

MOROCCO ON SIERRA CLUB ROSTER

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club group will feature John Fisanotti’s photographic presentation of Morocco on June 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

Fisanotti, a native of Southern California, developed a keen interest in astronomy at a young age and this led to his present interest in photography and an attempted eclipse photo. He studied at Glendale Community College and California State University, Los Angeles. His love of photographic art never waned and evidence of his devotion can be seen in galleries on his website including travel, outdoor (both scenic and astronomical) with publications and exhibits.

PFAR HOSTING WINE TASTING AND AUCTION

The Pasadena-Foothills Association of REALTORS® Charitable Foundation (PFARCF) is hosting its annual wine tasting and auction fundraiser at a La Cañada residence. Guests will enjoy in a live auction and a variety of prize giveaways. The wine tasting event serves as one of the Foundation’s popular tent-pole fundraisers, filled with fun surprises and an amazing wine selection, all to service the local community.

This year’s fundraising event from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 13 at the home of Mike and Sandy Kobeissi in La Cañada. Proceeds from the evening will assist in the Charitable Foundation’s mission of serving local charities and the distribution of scholarships for students seeking to pursue higher education.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
