Elderly Need a Lift at Local Senior Apartments

By Mary O’KEEFE

Some elderly residents of the Honolulu Manor Senior Apartments at 2500 Honolulu Ave. have been unable to leave their apartments for about a week since the second elevator in their apartment complex stopped working.

One of the elevators has not worked for several months, according to a resident who added that, because many of the residents are elderly, it is difficult if not impossible for them to use the stairs.

According to the State of California Dept. of Industrial Relations, one of the elevators has an updated permit, although it does not appear to be posted. The permit expires on Sept. 28. However, the other elevator was “tagged by Cal/OSHA for non compliance on Jan. 1, 2019.”

The City of Glendale Building and Safety have been aware of this issue and are attempting to work with the building’s owner.

“We went out there [Wednesday] and talked to the [management]. They said they were in the process of repairing the elevator,” said Dan Bell, City of Glendale spokesman.

But since the complex was still not in compliance it was cited by the City.

“They said the parts were in and they would be working on it [Thursday],” Bell added.

According to a friend of a resident of the complex, since both elevators were not working residents called the fire department for help. Firefighters, according to the friend, helped carry residents down the stairs.

CVW has made several attempts to contact the owner of the building without success.
