Earlier this year, students from Chamlian Armenian School in Glendale participated in the 68th Annual Los Angeles County Science Fair held at the Pasadena Convention Center. Thirteen of the students were highly competitive across several different scientific categories winning numerous awards.
Due to their strong showing at the county level, the students, accompanied by the head of the Chamlian Science Dept. Lida Gevorkian, were invited to participate at the California Science Fair state finals held at the California Science Center in Exposition Park.
At the state finals there were 801 projects presented by 947 students representing 401 schools across California. Six Chamlian students competed extremely well including first place winner Shant Koutnouyan, who devised a cheaper and more beneficial alternative for disposing of used engine oil; Michael Baghdassarian secured fourth place with his project of what isolated substances in Manuka honey can preserve raw unrefrigerated and unpasteurized milk from spoiling. Receiving honorable mention were Gary Shirikchian for his project titled “Hydroponics, a Natural Hero;” Jake Grigorian, “Which Robotic Apparatus Toggles and Flag the Most Effectively;” and Keghon Kasparian and Vahan Kordian for “Eggshells to Save Lives.” Also pictured above is Lida Gevorkian, science department chair, and Dr. Talin Kargodorian, school principal.
