CVTC Meets Tonight

The monthly meeting of the CV Town Council is tonight, Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library community room, 2809 Foothill Blvd.

CVCA Plans Meeting

The Crescenta Valley Community Association will have its monthly meeting on Thursday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. The CVCA is a cross-jurisdictional, volunteer organization that encourages collaboration among community groups so that the Crescenta Valley can be represented with one voice. 

All are invited to the La Crescenta Library community room (entrance off La Crescenta Avenue)  at 2809 Foothill Blvd.

Summer at Deukmejian Park

Welcome the summer season by taking part in the wilderness workday at Deukmejian Wilderness Park on Saturday, June 22 from 8 a.m. to noon. The temperature for the day is projected to be in the 70s – perfect for tree watering and invasive plant removal. Tools, materials, snacks and drinks will be provided. Waivers must be provided by all participants (available online at www.cvweekly.com/NEWS and at the City of Glendale website). Those under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian fill out the parent/guardian portion. 

Looking ahead to July, there will be a campfire program (“I Will Survive”) at Deukmejian Wilderness Park on Saturday, July 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This event will provide tips on hiking in the heat, basic first aid, keeping dogs safe on the trail, and more. Details coming soon.

Statements of Interest Accepted for Vacant City Council Seat

At its June 11 regular meeting, the Glendale City Council approved a motion for a future appointment to fill the vacancy on the City Council created when Councilmember Zareh Sinanyan resigned effective June 7. The term of office for the appointed seat runs through the March 2020 General Municipal Election.

To be considered, a written Statement of Interest must be submitted. The Statement of Interest may be delivered by personal delivery or mail to 613 E. Broadway, Room 220, Glendale, CA 91206, Attn: City Attorney Michael J. Garcia, or by email to MJGarcia@glendaleca.gov.

The Statement of Interest must be received at the City Attorney’s Office no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, June 17 (postmarks not accepted). To be eligible to serve on the City Council, applicants must be at least 18 years old, a citizen of the United States, as well as a resident and registered voter of the City of Glendale. The appointed person must be able to attend Council meetings every Tuesday. Attendance at City Council workshops and special meetings of the City Council may also be required.

The Council will consider the appointment at a special meeting on Friday, June 21 at 10 a.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall. If the Council does not make an appointment within 30 days of the vacancy (July 7), then it must immediately thereafter call a special election.

Rosemont Preserve Docent Led Tour

Join Outward Bound Adventures field instructor Edward Parker for a guided hike through the Rosemont Preserve on Saturday, June 22 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Participants will learn the skills of wilderness first aid, map and compass navigation, and how to follow leave no trace outdoor ethics promoting conservation in the outdoors.

 

Parker is an avid outdoor professional who has been teaching environmental outdoor education for the past 20 years. He has taught for the North Carolina Outward Bound School, Crossroads School in Santa Monica and several charter schools. He is a rope course facilitator, certified wilderness first responder and a certified top rope site manger from American Mountain Guides Association. He’s also been a backcountry ranger for the forest service.

This event is free to the public and suitable for all ages, no reservations required. Rain cancels event. Sorry, no pets please.

The Preserve is located at the north end of Rosemont Avenue, just past the chain link fence. As street parking is limited, please park at Two Strike Park, 5107 Rosemont Ave. Please wear sturdy shoes to walk the trail.
