INTRODUCTION TO FIRST AID

A free one-hour short overview on first aid will be presented as a service to the community on Saturday, July 27, at 11 a.m. at the Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills.

Information will be given on the vital things that a first aid responder does and how people can help and perhaps save someone’s life. Randy Ferman, a volunteer with the American Red Cross as a first aid incident commander at the annual Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade, will review the things everyone should know and discuss training options. Note that this is not a certification class.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY FREE CONCERT

Spend a relaxing afternoon with the jazz and blues rhythms of Maria de la Vegas & the Wayward 5.This concert is made possible through an LA Arts Commission grant provided by Fifth District Supervisor Katherine Barger. SPERA, BACHMANN AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

On Saturday, July 27 at 5 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse welcomes local author Deb Spera whose debut novel “Call Your Daughter Home” is about the ferocity of motherhood and the tough choices women make for their families. It was just honored by Oprah as a Women of Summer book.

Peter Bachmann, longtime headmaster of Flintridge Preparatory School, will join Spera for a conversation about her book.

In South Carolina in 1924, hardship is commonplace as the region is still recovering from the infamous boll weevil infestation that devastated the land and the economy. INFO FOR CANCER PATIENTS

A program for healing pain and anxiety for cancer patients will be presented at the Cancer Support Community-Pasadena on Monday, July 29 from 6 p.m. to 7.30 p.m.  It is free to attend.

   Tarnie Fulloon will offer techniques to relieve body pain, anxiety and emotional distress through movement and sensation tracking. Patients will acquire tools for healing and self-leadership.

Then on Tuesday, Aug. 6, a program dealing with end-of-life issues for cancer patients will be given at the Cancer Support Community-Pasadena from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The program is free of charge.

   Karen Morin Green will present the various choices for end-of-life and will discuss the requirements of the California End-of-Life Option Act.

On Thursday, Aug. 1, sale is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3, doors open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

AUTRY DOCENT CLASS

The Gene Autry Museum is having a docent class on select Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Aug. 1 through Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (times may vary).

Autry docents provide guided tours of permanent galleries and special exhibitions to diverse audiences while gaining intimate knowledge of the museum and its collections. Autry docents enjoy many social and professional benefits, including Autry-sponsored parties and gatherings, monthly potlucks, field trips and more.

Autry docents conduct tours for schoolchildren one day during the week or twice a month on weekends for families and adult groups.

No experience necessary. Training includes classes in Western history, art and art history, material culture, education, touring techniques, and more. Responsibilities include providing weekly tours, maintaining active Autry membership, and participating in continuing education both at the museum and throughout the region.

A $50 program fee includes reading materials. Apply early as class size is limited.

NEW BILINGUAL PROGRAM AT GLENDALE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

A new bi-lingual Armenian/English program entitled “Take Your Life Back After Cancer” is being presented at Glendale Memorial Hospital on Wednesdays from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The program is free of charge to the public.

SUMMER COOKOUT AT McGROARTY

McGroarty Arts Center is hosting a Burgers, Beer, and Band Night on Aug. 24 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at its historic location at 7570 McGroarty Terrace in Tujunga. The concert is featuring Seize the Night, a high-energy band performing classic rock to modern pop.

50PLUS PROGRAM AT DIGNITY

Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital 50plus Program offers monthly health and fitness lectures and classes and special discounts for those age 50 and older.

An AARP Mature Driving Refresher Class is being held on Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program is designed to refresh senior driving skills and knowledge of the rules and hazards of the road. Participants must have taken the two-day course within the three-year time of previous certificate coverage to be eligible to take the one-day refresher course. CVHS REUNION FOR CLASS OF ’79

Classmates of Crescenta Valley High School Class of 1979 are having their 40th reunion the weekend of Sept. 20-Sept. 22.

The Pioneer Club meets the first and third Mondays every month at the fellowship hall – Healy Hall – at Holy Redeemer Church, 2411 Montrose Ave. (parking and hall accessed around the corner on lower Briggs Avenue). The club also offers trips and tours bus trip to Harrah’s Rincon Casino for a day of fun on selected dates plus other outings.

On the second and fourth Mondays of the month, the New Beginnings Club meets at St. James Church fellowship hall, 4625 Dunmore Ave. in La Crescenta.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
