FUNERAL INFO AT KIWANIS MEETING

Ed Brail of Glendale Funeral Home will be speaking on “Demystifying the Funeral Experience” at the Aug. 2 meeting of the Glendale Kiwanis.

Guests are welcome at the weekly lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meetings start at noon.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado Blvd. in Glendale.

 

INFO FOR CANCER PATIENTS

On Tuesday, Aug. 6, a program dealing with end-of-life issues for cancer patients will be given at the Cancer Support Community-Pasadena from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The program is free of charge.

   Karen Morin Green will present the various choices for end-of-life and will discuss the requirements of the California End-of-Life Option Act.

Then on Aug. 13, a presentation dealing with the most current colorectal cancer treatments will be given at the Cancer Support Community-Pasadena from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The presentation is free of charge.

   Dr. Heinz-Josef Lenz will discuss the newest treatments, side effect management, social and emotional issues, and survivorship questions.

THE ANNUAL SPRING BOOK SALE

The annual spring (a little late) book sale hosted by the Friends of the Library will be held at the La Cañada Flintridge Library continues through Saturday, Aug. 3. Today, Thursday, Aug. 1, the sale is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3, doors open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Final day sale price is $1 per grocery bag of books.

AUTRY DOCENT CLASS

The Gene Autry Museum is having a docent class on select Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Aug. 1 through Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (times may vary).

Autry docents provide guided tours of permanent galleries and special exhibitions to diverse audiences while gaining intimate knowledge of the museum and its collections. Autry docents enjoy many social and professional benefits, including Autry-sponsored parties and gatherings, monthly potlucks, field trips and more.

Autry docents conduct tours for schoolchildren one day during the week or twice a month on weekends for families and adult groups.

No experience necessary. Training includes classes in Western history, art and art history, material culture, education, touring techniques, and more. Responsibilities include providing weekly tours, maintaining active Autry membership, and participating in continuing education both at the museum and throughout the region.

A $50 program fee includes reading materials. Apply early as class size is limited.

EUBANK HAS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SHOW

Paintings, photographs and sketches from one artist’s quest to paint all the oceans in the world is on display through today, Aug. 1 in “Danielle Eubank | One Artist Five Oceans” at the Kwan Fong Gallery of Art and Culture at California Lutheran University, 120 Memorial Parkway in Thousand Oaks. Eubank is a Shadow Hills resident.

On Sunday, Aug. 4 at 5 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse welcomes Mary Walker Baron and Jeff Baugh, authors of “Stick With Us and We’ll Get You There: How To Be Where You Want To Be On the Road and In Life.”

Jeff Baugh, an airborne traffic reporter, flies over traffic helping people reach their travel destinations. Mary Walker Baron, a licensed clinical social worker, helps people overcome obstacles that life presents them.

PAINT & SIP AT THE LCWC

On Thursday, Aug. 8 at 7 p.m., the La Crescenta Woman’s Club is hosting a Paint & Sip night.

All are invited to create their own painted masterpiece vase while having a few drinks, hanging out with friends and meeting new people. No experience is required!

All supplies (paints, brushes, vase) are included. Guests will be walked through the painting step-by-step and will bring home their own painted glass vase.

This class is for teens and above. The price is $30 per person; $10 per reservation goes toward LCWC philanthropies. One prize drawing ticket included per reservation.

NOON CONCERTS OPEN TO PUBLIC

Glendale Noon Concerts is a free-admission concert series that takes place every first and third Wednesday from 12:10 p.m. to 12:40 p.m. in the sanctuary of Glendale City Church.

The next concert is on Aug. 7 and features Calico Winds performing woodwind quintets by Bill Douglas and Los Angeles composer John Steinmetz.

WELLNESS WORKS HOSTING TWO FUNDRAISERS

To support programs for veterans, Wellness Works will be holding two fundraisers in August. On Sunday, Aug. 18 VFW The Gudgeon 8310 at 1006 Magnolia in Burbank

Is serving a full breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A donation of $10 is requested and the day includes an opportunity to win raffle prizes.

SUMMER NIGHTS CELEBRATED AT BOLTON HALL

Bring a picnic dinner, blankets and lawn chairs to Bolton Hall Museum on Friday, Aug. 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., to celebrate Summer Nights at this historical local landmark. The Little Landers Historical Society and the Village Poets of Sunland Tujunga will be celebrating summer and local history with poetry and a sing-along on the lawn outside the museum.

The Village Poets of Sunland Tujunga is a group comprised of the current and former Poets Laureate of Sunland Tujunga who organize poetry readings in the community, write poetry, publish books (many of which are in the Bolton Hall Museum gift shop) and keep poetry alive in the foothills. SUMMER COOKOUT AT McGROARTY

McGroarty Arts Center is hosting a Burgers, Beer, and Band Night on Aug. 24 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at its historic location at 7570 McGroarty Terrace in Tujunga. The concert is featuring Seize the Night, a high-energy band performing classic rock to modern pop.

Enjoy flame-grilled burgers with all the fixings, tasty side dishes and delicious desserts. Craft beer, too. There will be wine and vegetarian options, too.

All the proceeds from the food and beverage sales will go to the non-profit McGroarty Arts Center.

 

SUZUKI MUSIC PROGRAM PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT

The Suzuki Music Program of Los Angeles (SMPLA) will hold its “Making Music the Suzuki Way – Every Child Can Learn!” parent information night on Monday, Aug. 26 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Encino. 50 PLUS PROGRAM AT DIGNITY

Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital 50plus Program offers monthly health and fitness lectures and classes and special discounts for those age 50 and older.

An AARP Mature Driving Refresher Class is being held on Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program is designed to refresh senior driving skills and knowledge of the rules and hazards of the road. Participants must have taken the two-day course within the three-year time of previous certificate coverage to be eligible to take the one-day refresher course. The class is being held at the hospital’s Cancer Center Auditorium. The cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for nonmembers. Check/money order must be payable to AARP. RSVP by Aug. 9.

CVHS REUNION FOR CLASS OF ’79

Classmates of Crescenta Valley High School Class of 1979 are having their 40th reunion the weekend of Sept. 20-Sept. 22.

An ice breaker for classmates is on Friday, Sept. 20 from 7 p.m. to midnight

WELCOME, SENIORS

Seniors who would like to add a little friendly visiting and lunching with friendly ladies and gentlemen, then play a spirited game of bingo, are invited to the Pioneer Club and the New Beginnings Club.

The Pioneer Club meets the first and third Mondays every month at the fellowship hall – Healy Hall – at Holy Redeemer Church, 2411 Montrose Ave. (parking and hall accessed around the corner on lower Briggs Avenue). The club also offers trips and tours bus trip to Harrah’s Rincon Casino for a day of fun on selected dates plus other outings.

On the second and fourth Mondays of the month, the New Beginnings Club meets at St. James Church fellowship hall, 4625 Dunmore Ave. in La Crescenta.

Each club has their own personality and leadership. All are welcome.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
