KIWANIS HOSTS GPD

The Kiwanis Club of Glendale hosts a program on the GPD K9 Unit presented by Paulette Ramsay Wood on Aug. 23.

Guests are welcome at the weekly lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meetings start at noon.

CAFÉ OFFERS SENIOR DINNER DEALS

USC Verdugo Hills Hospital is now offering senior (65 years and older) dinners every day from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. from the hospital’s Hillside Café. Seniors can purchase any meal on the menu for 30% off, and there will be a special “mindful eating” menu selection that has been designed by the hospital’s registered dietitians to ensure that seniors (or anyone in the community) are receiving their necessary nutrition while eating well.

The senior meals are an ideal option for anyone who may not have the time or ability to make dinner each night, especially during the summer heat.

WELL-BEING BLOCK PARTY

Adventist Health – Glendale, with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, is hosting a Well-being Block Party on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Glendale Central Park. Activities will be geared to “jumpstart whole health” targeting heart and brain health. In addition there will be healthy cooking demonstrations, a free produce market, exercise classes and more.

SUMMER COOKOUT AT McGROARTY

McGroarty Arts Center is hosting a Burgers, Beer, and Band Night on Aug. 24 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at its historic location at 7570 McGroarty Terrace in Tujunga. The concert is featuring Seize the Night, a high-energy band performing classic rock to modern pop.

Enjoy flame-grilled burgers with all the fixings, tasty side dishes and delicious desserts. Craft beer, too. There will be wine and vegetarian options, too.

All the proceeds from the food and beverage sales will go to the non-profit McGroarty Arts Center.

PREPARING FOR A CRISIS

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, the Pasadena-Foothills Association of REALTORS® will kick-off REALTOR® Safety Month with a live safety and disaster town hall event featuring the Pasadena police and fire departments. The three-day event will include CPR and first aid certification training along with a crisis management livestream.

ANCIENT CHINESE POETRY & FLUTE MUSIC

AUTHORS AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

Grace Mase, author of “Revivify Your Home: Take Control of Your Home Improvement with Peace of Mind and Level Up Your Life,” will be at Flintridge Bookstore and Coffeehouse on Sunday, Aug. 25

On Saturday, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m., Emmy Award-winning helicopter cameraman and author David Alan Arnold will be at Flintridge Bookstore. Arnold has written two memoirs, “Help from Above: How I Went from Sweeping the Floor to Painting the Sky” and “What Lies Above the Clouds: A True Crime Story.” In these books, he shares stories from his personal and professional lives, including thrilling, challenging and sometimes death-defying moments.

On Sept. 10, at 5:30 p.m., epic fantasy authors D.J. Butler (“Witchy Kingdom” series), Christopher Husberg (Chaos Queen Quintet), Christopher Ruocchio (“Sun Eater series), and Luke Tarzian (Shadow Twins Trilogy) will be at Flintridge Bookstore for a reading, discussion, and signing of their recent books.

On Thursday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m., Flintridge Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts a discussion and reading with award-winning authors Julie Berry and Catherine Linka in celebration of the release of Margaret Atwood’s “The Testaments,” the sequel to “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

INFO FOR CANCER PATIENTS

A series of free information presentations is being offered by Cancer Support Community-Pasadena.

On Monday, Aug. 26, the presentation deals with self-hypnosis for cancer patients and is from 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. Carmela Tunzi of Mind Flow Hypnosis will discuss the benefits of self-hypnosis to help manage symptoms of treatment, reduce stress, and help manage pain. Attendees will learn skills for use on a daily basis.

On Sept. 17 from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m., a discussion about breast cancer prevalence will take place at the Cancer Support Community-Pasadena. Dr. Maria E. Nelson will speak about benign and malignant forms of the disease, diagnostic work-ups and treatment options, including surgical choices.

On Oct. 8, information about how Reiki can help cancer patients will be given from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Reiki is a stress reduction and relaxation technique, which can be used to encourage healing and to provide other benefits. Reiki can strengthen the body, decrease pain and enhance the body’s ability to heal.

50PLUS PROGRAM AT DIGNITY

Dignity Health Glendale Memorial Hospital 50plus Program offers monthly health and fitness lectures and classes and special discounts for those age 50 and older.

An AARP Mature Driving Refresher Class is being held on Aug. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program is designed to refresh senior driving skills and knowledge of the rules and hazards of the road. Participants must have taken the two-day course within the three-year time of previous certificate coverage to be eligible to take the one-day refresher course. The class is being held at the hospital’s Cancer Center Auditorium. The cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for nonmembers. Check/money order must be payable to AARP.

SUMMER NIGHTS CELEBRATED AT BOLTON HALL

Bring a picnic dinner, blankets and lawn chairs to Bolton Hall Museum on Friday, Aug. 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., to celebrate Summer Nights at this historical local landmark. The Little Landers Historical Society and the Village Poets of Sunland Tujunga will be celebrating summer and local history with poetry and a sing-along on the lawn outside the museum.

The Village Poets of Sunland Tujunga is a group comprised of the current and former Poets Laureate of Sunland Tujunga who organize poetry readings in the community, write poetry, publish books (many of which are in the Bolton Hall Museum gift shop) and keep poetry alive in the foothills. SOUTH AMERICA AND CAPE HORN ON ROSTER

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents “Bruce Hale on South America and Cape Horn” on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

Hale travels the world and provides very interesting programs for the local Sierra Club meetings. He will share his experience and perspective of the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago of southern Chile, which is located on the small Hornos Island.

AUTRY DOCENT CLASS

The Gene Autry Museum is having a docent class on select Tuesdays and Thursdays, through Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (times may vary).

Autry docents provide guided tours of permanent galleries and special exhibitions to diverse audiences while gaining intimate knowledge of the museum and its collections. Autry docents enjoy many social

professional benefits, including Autry-sponsored parties and gatherings, monthly potlucks, field trips and more.

Autry docents conduct tours for schoolchildren one day during the week or twice a month on weekends for families and adult groups.

No experience necessary. Training includes classes in Western history, art and art history, material culture, education, touring techniques, and more. Responsibilities include providing weekly tours, maintaining active Autry membership, and participating in continuing education both at the museum and throughout the region.

A $50 program fee includes reading materials. Apply early as class size is limited.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon -1 p.m. This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
