On Friday, Sept. 27, the Kiwanis Club of Glendale will be dark after the installation on Thursday night of its new president Randy Slaughter. On Oct. 4, Slaughter will present a program on the benefits of being a Kiwaniian.

Guests are welcome at the weekly lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meetings start at noon.

ace/121 Gallery presents The Art Spirit, a multi-generational showcase of young artists and the working professionals who inspire them. The opening reception is Friday, Sept. 27 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and closing reception on Friday, Nov. 8, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

During the summer, four professional artists visited the Babajanyan Art Academy in Glendale to share their knowledge, experience and passion for the arts with the young artists training there. The Art Spirit showcases the art from these workshops.

In addition to the receptions, on Monday, Oct. 7, artist Alex Babajanyan will hold his advanced studies class from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Students will be drawing from live models. Limited space is available to join. On Friday, Oct. 18, artist Laura Brody will be conducting a textile workshop from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

BUS TOUR DAY

Pasadena Heritage presents Bus Tour Day on Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will be three different bus tours that explore Pasadena’s architectural heritage and history. The Bungalow Courts and Garden Apartments Tour explores Pasadena’s innovation in housing from the early 20th Century. The second tour will explore the extensive influence of Spanish and Mexican architecture on Pasadena’s built environment. The third tour explores historically significant but often overlooked people, places and things.

ICONS OF ARCHITECTURE HOME TOUR

The Glendale Historical Society presents the Icons of Architecture Home Tour on Sunday, Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s self-driving tour includes five exceptional homes in Glendale designed by some of the most celebrated and influential architects of the 20th century: the Taylor House, Schaffer House, Perkins House, Story House and Calori House.

Dr. Ted Stern, a professor of music, is again conducting a series of music appreciation classes for adults in the community. An eight-week recovery program for women who have recently completed treatment for gynecological cancers will be held at the City of Hope campus in Duarte on Tuesdays and Thursdays Oct. 1 through Nov. 21 from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. The program is free of charge.

The program offers yoga, strength training and emotional support for women who have no evidence of disease and have completed active treatment between eight weeks and up to 36 months ago.

FREE LECTURE ON CALIFORNIA NATIVE WILDFLOWERS AND PLANTS

The Lanterman Historical Museum Foundation, in collaboration with Theodore Payne Foundation, will present a free lecture on the beauty and ecological benefits of California’s native wildflowers and plants. “The Power of Plants: Growing a Sustainable Future” is free of charge and will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct, 6 at the Visitor Center of the Lanterman House.

The lecture will be presented by Erin Johnson, outreach manager of the Theodore Payne Foundation. Visitors will learn about the diversity of California’s native flora and how its use in urban landscapes reduces pesticides, conserves water, and transforms sterile spaces into thriving habitats that support birds, butterflies, pollinators, and the well-being of all our communities. The Lanterman House, with assistance from Theodore Payne Foundation, is planning to install a small native plant garden.

Seating for the lecture on Oct. 6 is offered on a first-come basis, with a maximum occupancy of 40. No reservations are necessary.

A.D.D. MAN COMING TO S-T LIBRARY

On Thursday, Oct. 10, filmmaker and animator-agitator Chris Hume will present a free animation event featuring “A.D.D. MAN! – the superhero with no attention span.”

The show is one-hour of animated episodes that will include a question and answer period after the show with special appearance by A.D.D. Man himself – creator Chris Hume. Light snacks and refreshments, too.

The event is sponsored by STARC: the Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Councils’ Arts, Recreation and Culture Committee, the Rotary International, the Los Angeles Public Library – ST Branch and also Ren Rasa Yogamaya, E-RYT 500.

Hume graduated from Bard College in New York with a degree in cinema. He won the Maya Deren Prize in his graduating class for excellence and commitment to Cinema. He is the son of Alexis Gershwin and television and film writer Edward Hume.

Little Landers Historical Society will host the story of Union Station, an historical look at the famous and beautiful Los Angeles downtown train terminal, in its series of monthly second Saturday historical and educational programs. AUTHORS AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

Until recently, much of the cosmos has been invisible to the human eye. Launched in 2003, the Spitzer Space Telescope has brought the infrared universe into focus as never before. Werner and Eisenhardt are among the scientists who worked for decades to bring this historic mission to life. Here is their inside story of how Spitzer continues to carry out cutting-edge infrared astronomy to help answer fundamental questions that have intrigued humankind.

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding-related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
