Students at Crescenta Valley High School are launching a week of activities from Sept. 30-Oct. 4 in support of safe schools for the LGBTQ community. Activities are in recognition of “Ally Week,” part of a national event organized by the Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

National Ally Week is a response to the anti-LGBTQ bullying that is is too commonplace in many schools. CVHS students and staff hope to build on an already welcoming and safe environment for LGBTQ youth by encouraging students, staff, parents and community members to identify as “allies” (defined as people who take demonstrable action supporting members of a marginalized group with which they do not identify).

In honor of Ally Week, students identifying as LGBTQ allies will be invited to sign pledge cards and wear rainbow pins, stickers and other Ally Week “swag.” Guest speakers, student performances and special Ally Week lessons will take place throughout the week for students and employees who wish to participate. The CVHS student newspaper will print a special Ally Week edition. The celebration will culminate on Friday, Oct. 4, with an Ally Week-themed football game. Among other festivities, the stands will be decorated and football players, marching band members, and cheerleaders will be invited to wear rainbow helmet decals and pins.

“I’m proud that our school is continuing to demonstrate our deep support for LGBTQ students,” said Advanced Placement Government teacher and CVHS Gay-Straight Alliance Club Advisor Alicia Harris. “Ally Week reminds all students that this is a safe school and that they can count on our staff and their fellow students for the support they need and deserve.”
