A team of 48 missionaries, including physicians, nurses and associates from across Adventist Health Glendale, recently completed its fifth medical mission trip to Artsakh. With clinicians from Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Keck Medicine of USC and PIH Health and the Armenia Fund, the professionals worked for a week to save lives, provide care and proctor the local physicians and nurses of Artsakh.

Among those treated was a 27-year-old man with congenital heart disease. After a check-up, it was determined that he needed immediate open heart intervention. He was assured that the cost would be covered by Adventist Health Glendale and the government of Artsakh.

“His gratitude filled the room and, for that, I’m forever thankful,” said Alice Issai, president of resident Adventist Health Glendale. “This was just one of hundreds of patient stories which made me proud to be a part of Adventist Health Glendale.”

The medical mission was made possible through the support of dedicated volunteers who performed more than 100 procedures and major operations ranging from knee replacements and multiple oncologic and general surgeries to multiple interventional cardiology and neurointerventional procedures. Additionally, upwards of 900 consultations were given by primary care, oncology and pediatric physicians both at the hospital in eight surrounding villages. According to Issai, the team was well-equipped with more than seven tons of medical supplies, instruments, equipment and pharmaceuticals.

“I want to extend my gratitude and appreciation to all our missionaries for their hard work and our donors who made this mission possible,” said Issai. “You make me so proud.”
