The Montrose Christmas Parade was my official start to the holiday season and everything that means. On Saturday, we here at the CV Weekly were busy spiffing up our office for a ‘pre-parade’ open house and goodie giveaway.

Our office faces Honolulu Avenue and for those preparing for the parade, we opened our picture window and gave out cookies (deliciously prepared by Berolina Bakery) and hot apple cider. The daughter of our office manager Debbie was in charge of this duty, extending an invitation to those gathering outside for the parade. Inside the main office we held a “pre-parade” open house and welcomed in many friends and co-workers. Gail over at Gourmet A Go Go prepared a delicious spread for us that we were proud to serve.

Then at 5:30 we made our way to the flatbed truck generously provided by Crosstown Towing. Our team had a lot of fun adding the hay bales, wreaths and Christmas lights – it really made the truck festive! And apparently the crowd lined up along Honolulu agreed as many hollered out well wishes and holiday greetings.

I have to say that it was very humbling to ride down Honolulu and hear the shouts of support. To those who came out on Saturday night and gave us a thumbs up, I say “thank you.”

While the parade is definitely the kick off to the holiday season, the Prom Plus Holiday Tour of Homes is most certainly a tradition not to be missed. The home tour, which takes place this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., showcases four homes that have gone the extra mile in decorating or are of special significance. This year two homes are actually located in the lower portion of Glendale. One is nestled in the canyon overlooking Glendale and is owned by Flintridge House owner James Davis Polk and the other is just about a half mile below him and belongs to CVHS principal Michele Doll. Both are gems that tour guests will absolutely love.

Up in the foothills, the Richards home on Santa Carlotta will be familiar to many of us. Son Will has choreographed a music and light display for the last several years – always a destination for our family. The newly christened Fire House in front of St. Luke’s of the Mountains has a rich history that will be highlighted by students who have decorated the center in 1930s style. In the expansive courtyard at St. Luke’s will be vendors, gift baskets and baked goods.

I’ve had a chance to visit all four locations and I can promise that this year’s tour will be one of the best. Tickets are $25 and are available here at the CV Weekly office, the high school, Merle Norman Cosmetics on Honolulu, the UPS Stores in La Crescenta and Montrose and CV Chamber of Commerce office and also at each of the homes on Saturday.
