For those in the Glendale and Crescenta Valley area who wished there was an ice skating rink closer than downtown Los Angeles their wish has come true.
For the first time, the City of Glendale has its very own ice skating rink erected in the parking lot of Glendale City Hall, 122 N. Isabel St.
The grand opening was recently held, kicked off with performances by the Los Angeles Ice Theater and skating skills exhibited by the Glendale Police Dept. hockey team.
“This is an incredible day for the City of Glendale. Never before have we had a skating rink behind City Hall that is for everyone to use,” said Mayor Ara Najarian. “The City Council allocated $500,000 of our special Measure S funds [for] the enjoyment and improvement of the quality of life.”
Measure S, the Glendale Quality of Life and Essential Services measure, was approved by voters on Nov. 6, 2018.
Najarian said the Council members who voted to approve the ice rink took some heat for their vote.
“But let the sounds and vision of young children prove them wrong,” he said of naysayers.
The Glendale Ice Rink will be open through Jan. 6, 2020. Its hours from now until Dec. 22 are Monday through Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays from 2:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. From Dec. 23 to Jan. 6, 2020 the rink will be open Sunday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Special hours for Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and for Christmas Day, Dec. 25, and New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 2020, from noon to 9 p.m.
There are unlimited skating sessions, no re-entry. The Glendale Ice Rink is resurfaced every 90 minutes; no skaters are allowed on the ice for 30 minutes. The cost is $12 general admission; must be at least 3 years old to skate. Skate rental is $5 and $8 to rent a skate aid. Skaters can also bring their own skates. Note that no refunds or rain checks will be issued.
