One More Week for Public to Comment on LA County Election Plan

By Mary O’KEEFE

Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Dean C. Logan has announced that the County’s amended Election Administration Plan [EAP] has been posted and is available for public comment/input until Dec. 27.

The EAP is the County’s strategy to administer elections under the California Voter’s Choice Act, communicate the County’s voter education and outreach plan and identify and operate voting centers located throughout the County.

This includes the outreach to educate voters on the new voting system. In the Crescenta Valley the display was at the La Crescenta Library with members from organizations representing Republicans and Democrats.

Los Angeles County (the County) is the nation’s most populous voting jurisdiction with more than 5.4 million registered voters. Since 2009, the County’s Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (Department) has been working to improve the voting experience through its Voting Solutions for All People (VSAP) Initiative. Given the size, complexity and demographics of the County, one of the department’s top priorities has been to remove administrative barriers and obstacles that have made it difficult for voters to participate in the electoral process. VSAP seeks to ensure that voters in the County have greater opportunities to participate by providing expanded options for voting in a manner that is convenient, accessible and secure, and are fully aligned with efforts to expand voting options throughout the State, according to the EAP website.

Part of the plan was to provide a more flexible experience that would offer voters more choices for how, when and where they cast their ballots.

“This [includes] our transition to 11 days to vote,” said Mike Sanchez, LA County Registrar-Recorder spokesman.

Although the new extended voting time and flexible areas to vote will be in place in the upcoming March 2020 election, the new vote-by-mail system had been used in 2018 elections. Vote-By Mail included more choices for drop-off locations that were available 29 days prior to Election Day.
