KIWANIS CLUB READY FOR NEW YEAR

On Jan. 3, the Kiwanis Club of Glendale welcomes speaker Ilin Magran, Ed. D who will be speaking on GUSD child welfare and attendance.

Guests are welcome at the weekly lunch meeting. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meetings start at noon.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado Blvd. in Glendale.

PSA HOSTS GROUP ART SHOW

The Pasadena Society of Artists is having a group show through Jan. 4 that features 50 local artists with artworks on view from realistic to abstract, paintings to crocheted figures. All artwork is available for purchase, priced at $250 or less.

ARMENIAN CHRISTMAS EVE AND EPIPHANY DINNER

St. Luke’s of the Mountains Episcopal Church, the Outreach Committee of the Meher & Satig Der Ohanessian Youth Center and the Crescenta Valley Lions Club are hosting an Armenian Christmas Eve and Epiphany Dinner for the less fortunate in the community. There will be a free turkey dinner. This is open to all Crescenta Valley area low-income residents.

FREE WEEKLY LECTURE ON TOXINS

The Church of Scientology Mission of the Foothills is offering a free lecture every Tuesday night in January at 7 p.m. explaining the purification program, a detoxification program that helps eliminate drugs, toxins and other chemicals that lodge in the body that adversely affect a person’s mind, body and spirit.

The talk will be given by La Cañada resident Larry Monroe who has been helping people and businesses deal with life’s challenges for over 35 years.

The purification program is a tightly supervised regimen of exercise and sweating in the sauna, along with proper nutrition and sleep.

LA CRESCENTA WOMAN’S CLUB HOSTS MEETING

On Wednesday, Jan. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon, the daytime luncheon meeting of the La Crescenta Women’s Club will be held at the clubhouse, 4004 La Crescenta Ave. in La Crescenta.

These meetings are geared for those interested in making new friends and making a difference in the community. The daytime business meeting includes luncheon with program on the second Wednesday of the month September through May at the Clubhouse.

LCVRWF HOSTS COLUMNIST

The La Crescenta Valley Republican Women Federated next meets on Thursday, Jan. 9 at the Oakmont Country Club. Special speaker is Susan Shelley, a columnist for 11 daily newspapers, who will address current issues. She wrote the book “How Trump Won.”

POTTERY CLASS AT LIBRARY

On Saturday, Jan. 11 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., artist Rowan Harrison will facilitate a Native American pottery class at the La Crescenta Library. Harrison will emphasize the classic tradition of hand building and hand coiled pottery as practiced by Native Americans of the Navajo and Pueblo of Isleta, people of New Mexico, and other cultures around the world.

All are invited to create a great piece of art. All materials will be provided for this free event.

AAUW HAVING FOUNDERS DAY CELEBRATION

The Glendale Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will meet for its Founders Day luncheon on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 11:30 a.m. at the Oakmont Country Club. BRAND ASSOCIATES 2020 MUSIC SERIES

The Brand Associates 2020 Music Series will consist of six concerts taking place in the Brand Library Recital Hall from Jan. 11 – April 4. The concerts are on Saturday afternoons at 2 p.m. The series presents top chamber music groups from Southern California and beyond. The concerts are sponsored by the Brand Associates.  A reception will follow each concert with an opportunity to meet the artists.

On Jan.11, the Elixir Piano Trio, consisting of violinist Samvel Chilingarian, cellist Fang Fang Xu and pianist Lucy Nargizyan, will be performing.

PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE JOB MARKET

The Community Scholarship Foundation of La Cañada, in conjunction with the Glendale Unified School District, will present five sessions focused on the top 20 occupations expected to grow in the next eight years. All sessions are free and open to the public. The seminars are geared at high school students who are planning their future. The first session is scheduled for Jan. 13 at Verdugo Hills Hospital. The Community Scholarship Foundation of La Cañada, Inc., has been granting scholarships totaling over $1 million since 1964.

On Jan. 13, featured speaker Keith M. Hobbs, CEO of the Verdugo Hills Hospital, will discuss the expected growth of occupations in the healthcare industry.This session will give students and their families first hand knowledge on healthcare occupations and their requirements, typical day of work, and advice for the future.

EGYPT AND JORDAN ON CV SIERRA CLUB ROSTER

The Crescenta Valley Sierra Club Group presents Fred Dong’s trip to Bhutan: the Dragon Kingdom on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at the La Crescenta Library.

Fred Dong, chair of the Crescenta Valley Sierra Club, has returned recently from Bhutan, known as the Dragon Kingdom, having been opened up to tourism in 1974. Only about 7,000 Americans each year get a chance to visit this mysterious Asian country in the Himalayas, located in the Indian subcontinent.  Dong, in his presentation, will show the people, wildlife, architecture and festivals and a trip to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. There will also be a short presentation on an upcoming trip to Egypt with an optional trip to Jordan by Mayflower Tours.

The program begins following news of conservation and outings. This is a free event and everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

LCWC HOSTS BINGO

On Saturday, Jan. 18, the community is invited to a bingo game at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club. Check-in is at 5 p.m. Pizza, sandwiches, chips, cookies, soda, water and more will be available for purchase.

All games pay $100 or more! Admission is $20 per person and includes a packet for 10 games. Each game has six cards. Opportunity baskets, too!

FREE EDUCATIONAL FAIR AT USC-VERDUGO HILLS HOSPITAL

USC-VHH is hosting AIB2B – “Equipped for The Future,” an education fair for HS/MS/skilled trades.

This is of particular interest to parents of middle and high school students. This free community educational event will share opportunities available to families with sixth-12th grade students in areas of school choice, extracurricular and enrichment options, other affordable and unique offerings for students.

CAFÉ OFFERS SENIOR DINNER DEALS

USC Verdugo Hills Hospital is now offering senior (65 years and older) dinners every day from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. from the hospital’s Hillside Café. Seniors can purchase any meal on the menu for 30% off, and there will be a special “mindful eating” menu selection that has been designed by the hospital’s registered dietitians to ensure that seniors (or anyone in the community) are receiving their necessary nutrition while eating well.

BILINGUAL PROGRAM AT GLENDALE MEMORIAL HOSPITAL

A bilingual Armenian/English program entitled “Take Your Life Back After Cancer” is presented at Glendale Memorial Hospital on Wednesdays from 5.30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The program is free of charge to the public.

WELCOME, SENIORS

Seniors who would like to add a little friendly visiting and lunching with friendly ladies and gentlemen, then play a spirited game of bingo, are invited to the Pioneer Club and the New Beginnings Club.

The Pioneer Club meets the first and third Mondays every month at the fellowship hall – Healy Hall – at Holy Redeemer Church, 2411 Montrose Ave. (parking and hall accessed around the corner on lower Briggs Avenue). The club also offers trips and tours bus trip to Harrah’s Rincon Casino for a day of fun on selected dates plus other outings.

On the second and fourth Mondays of the month, the New Beginnings Club meets at St. James Church fellowship hall, 4625 Dunmore Ave. in La Crescenta.

Each club has its own personality and leadership. All are welcome.

NEWS FROM FRIENDS OF THE SUNLAND-TUJUNGA BRANCH LIBRARY

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also supports programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, so donations are tax deductible. FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and A1C and tools for a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of complications.
