On the heels of winning a share of the Pacific League championship for the first time since 2014, the Crescenta Valley High School boys’ basketball team opened its CIF Division I playoff season Wednesday night at home against Crespi High. If the Falcons won, they would play Friday at Valencia at 7 p.m.
Coach Shawn Zargarian’s team, coming off a 2019 campaign where it advanced to the CIF semifinals and the state regional championships, once again turned in an impressive season, going 25-3 overall, winning 13 consecutive league games after dropping the opener to Pasadena. Its 13-1 league record tied them with Pasadena, which is usually in a league of its own.
The Falcons were led by Tyler Carlson, a senior guard who can shoot from anywhere and create his own shot. Last Thursday, on Senior Recognition Night against Arcadia, Carlson was hot from the start, and finished with 31 points in a 88-54 win. The Falcons led 40-24 at halftime, and it appeared that early on the Apaches came to play.
But things got out of hand later as CV players took advantage of their skill and shooting prowess. Carlson scored a fade away move that resembled NBA great Dirk Nowitzki’s iconic move, and then made a three-pointer. After that Allen Avaness hit one from long range to make it 59-32, and the celebration was on.
Zargarian was able to get playing time for all of his players, including seniors Carlson, Avaness, Chuck Meyer, Keegan Schmit, Danny Khani and Nate Nutall, who converted a free throw on a technical foul after play became chippy in the third quarter.
The CV girls’ basketball team finished third in league, going 9-5, and recording a 19-9 overall record. The team plays at Ventura High in its CIF Division 2-AA first-round playoff game today at 7 p.m. If the Falcons advance, they’ll play on Saturday night.
The CV girls’ soccer team won the Pacific League, going 11-0-3, and were 13-2-5 overall. The Falcons open the CIF Division 3 playoffs today at home against Etiwanda at 5 p.m. CV is 5-0-3 at home this season. If Coach Tyrasysha Peterson’s team wins they’ll play on Saturday.
For the boys’ soccer team, they played their Division 4 first round game on Wednesday at Artesia. CV would play Friday if they won. Coach Grant Clark’s team was third in league this season with a 9-1-4 record, and was 11-6-5 overall.
