Down and Dirty

The political machine has been put into high gear with television, radio and newspapers sharing the reasons why certain candidates should garner our vote. At the CV Weekly, writers Julie Butcher, Justin Hager and Mary O’Keefe have worked tirelessly to introduce readers to many of the candidates as well as the new voting system (CV Weekly will be one of several sponsors of a community introduction to the new voting machines on Feb. 24 at St. Luke’s of the Mountains’ Sadler Hall; see Mary O’Keefe’s article on the bottom cover. One of the criteria that we decided on early in the campaign season was to curb the negativity of the candidate ads placed in the CV Weekly. I think we have been somewhat successful, having candidates concentrate on their strengths rather than denigrate their competition.

Not all have taken this approach, though.

On Wednesday morning, as I was watching early morning television, an ad came on for presidential candidate Tom Steyer. In it he said something along the lines that “any Democrat” would be better than the person in the White House right now. I took offense with this comment. While I understand that Steyer does not care for President Trump at all, why is only a Democrat worth votes? In his opinion, does no other political party offer a candidate who would be better than Trump? Or have only Democrats demonstrated their value as President?

The comment irked me.

In other news, I must sadly report that I had to cancel my Paso Robles plans last weekend due to the cold that would not go away. I am happy to report, though, that I am feeling much better this week and have already rebooked my weekend away with best friend Amy though there won’t be a wine release party to attend. However, I know we will make the best of the trip.

We always do.

Did someone say “bingo?” USC Verdugo Hills Hospital Women’s Council is hosting Mardi Gras Bingo on Friday, Feb. 21 at the La Crescenta Woman’s Club. The cost is $65, which includes 10 rounds of bingo, hors d’oeuvres and two drink tickets. RSVP requested by Feb. 17 to Barbara.Jordan@med.usc.edu or call (818) 952-2226. A special treat is a drag queen who will be calling the games. Proceeds benefit the construction of the cath lab at the hospital.

On Feb. 22, the Kiwanis of Glendale is having its annual bingo night at the Elks Lodge in Glendale (120 E. Colorado). Admission is $20 for 10 games; every game is worth $100 in cash. Those who bring in a new children’s book get a free bonus game chip. Food and beverage will be available for purchase.

Then Prom Plus is hosting its annual bingo game at the American Legion Hall, 4011 La Crescenta Ave. Leap Year Bingo is on Feb. 29; doors open at 4:30 p.m. and the first game is at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $20 for 10 games (each game pays out $100) plus there will be a raffle and food for purchase. Tickets are available in the office of CV Weekly, 3800 La Crescenta Ave. #206 (the northeast corner of Honolulu Avenue) and at the Hall on bingo day.
