There have been some changes, and there are a few more to come, along Honolulu Avenue. Here is an update of a few businesses that have opened, closed and are in the process of opening their doors.
Moss Supermarket, formally Cordon’s Ranch Market, at 2931 Honolulu Ave. closed in 2017. Since then the building has been left vacant until recently when construction crews began working on the property. According to permits pulled from the City of Glendale for the location, the building is being divided into six tenant spaces with 110 sq. feet of the building area being converted into an outdoor space. The permit was issued on Jan. 14.
Within the Montrose Shopping Park, there are a few changes as well. Revelation Tops, a longtime tenant of 2321½ Honolulu Ave., on March 1 moved to 3808½ Ocean View Blvd., the location of Mountain Rose Gifts. The two will share the 3808½ Ocean View Blvd. address.
Rest Farmhouse Inspired closed its doors at 2420 Honolulu Ave. last year. A new restaurant has hung a shingle. Shawerma Kingdom serves Middle Eastern food at the former site of Rest Farmhouse Inspired.
Across the street, at 2425 Honolulu Ave., Ocean View Jewelry has closed and there are plans to open an arcade in its place.
Tutti Frutti has become a popular place for sweet desserts at 2411 Honolulu Ave., the former location of Quilt ‘N’ Things.
The building at the northeast corner of Honolulu Avenue and Wickham Way, 2300 Honolulu Ave., is under construction and is being remodeled to accommodate offices. A little walk east finds that Tribe to Table closed and its products can only be purchased online at www.tribetotable.com.
Holiday Hats and Gowns, a longtime favorite of Montrose, is still closed for remodeling after damage was done to the back of the location. Another Montrose tradition, Twigs and Things, has moved to 3806 Ocean View Blvd.
For years Critters was the place to go for birthday gifts and fun items. It still is a favorite place, but with a different owner under a new name. The store is now called That’s Darling.
Owner Juno Kim is a local resident. She went to elementary school in the area and the friends that she made back then now have children the same age as hers. The bonds they all formed during elementary school are now being made by their children.
Kim had some of her items for sale in Critters for about a year and when the storeowners decided to close she took over the entire location. She offers clothes and gifts for everyone from newborn to adult.
The location where Billy’s Board Shop once stood, 2227 Honolulu Ave., which closed in 2014 and then had become a women’s clothing store, is now empty.
At the end of the block at 2201 Honolulu Ave. is the future home of Gus and Andy’s Montrose Grill. Workers continue their construction of the building and the owners are working with the City’s planning department. They are hoping for a 2020 fall/winter opening.
