La Crescenta and Montrose residents are no strangers to indulging in the Christmas spirit. Families have been known to be extravagant in their pursuit of creating a perfect holiday home including coordinating music to blinking lights.
This year is no exception for the foothill community. The Crescenta Valley Town Council joyfully awarded two houses with this year’s 2010 Christmas Spirit Award.
The 15-year tradition is a tribute to the most festively decorated houses in the unincorporated area. Houses were nominated through town council members and voted upon by six of the members, although all members have a chance to vote.
This year the tie went to the Ruf family at 3035 Paraiso Way and Maria and Gil Lopez at 3020 Gertrude Ave. with Mike Scott at 4915 Rosemont Ave. as a close runner up.
Paraiso Way is a traditional treat for those looking to enjoy holiday décor. Those who travel to the 3000 block of Paraiso Way do not leave disappointed. The Ruf family home is the third house on the street to be named winner of this notable honor. Donna Armstrong of the Ruf family said that almost all of the neighbors on the street participate in the yearly celebration with lights and decorations.
Traveling south of Foothill Boulevard to 3785 Cloud Ave. (cross street of Honolulu Avenue), the Andersons have put up a light display that is fully animated to music. The music associated with the display can be heard on the FM radio station 99.1. The lights turn on at 5:00 p.m. and end at 10:00 p.m.
Across the street at 3794 Cloud Ave., the Nelson family has also gone all out decorating their front yard with holiday whimsy. Playful characters dot the yard, directing Santa to make sure and stop by.
The Richards home at 3500 Santa Carlotta is another community favorite. Son Will has coordinated the yearly decorating that includes thousands of lights linked with holiday music.
The holiday homes of the foothills reflect the enthusiasm of their residents who enjoy erecting the displays almost as much as those who drive by.
“It’s something we do every year [for the] enjoyment of everyone,“ said Armstrong.
