Suffice to say Crescenta Valley has found the San Fernando Invitational a challenging tournament.
The Crescenta Valley boys’ basketball team played three games this week in the Invite, beating Los Angeles University High with ease, 65-50, on Monday, getting steam-rolled
by West Ranch, 73-55, on Tuesday and then returning the favor to Kennedy, 59-38, on Wednesday.
“We’re still inconsistent,” said Falcons Head Coach Shawn Zargarian after the big victory over Kennedy at Granada Hills on Wednesday. “We were disappointed in our energy last night.”
The Falcons (6-3) performed much better after the crushing loss to West Ranch, according to Zargarian.
“We wanted energy today [against Kennedy] and to push the tempo,” the coach said. “We kept guys in front of us on defense and we limited turnovers.”
Falcons starter and leading points-scorer Cole Currie was noticeably benched in the first quarter of the game Wednesday for disciplinary reasons. Coaches had no comment on what he did to receive the disciplinary action.
“It’s easy to come out and pout when you’re disciplined, but [Currie] came out and had energy,” said Zargarian. “He was cheering for his teammates even when he was on the bench.”
Despite only playing three quarters, Currie still led the team with 15 points.
His teammates, senior Oshin Mahmoodian and junior Christian Misi, had 10 points each.
The game against West Ranch, an 18-point loss, gave the Falcons their third loss of the season. Zargarian was disappointed and believed the team could’ve performed better.
The Falcons had more than 25 turnovers in the game.
“We’ve played against great teams – Alemany, Chatsworth and West Ranch,” Zargarian said. “I can’t put my finger on [what the problem was against West Ranch]; we came off a
good win against University the day before. [Then] we came out in the second half today and scored eight points in the third quarter. We limited them to five points.
“I mean no disrespect toward Kennedy, but a better team is going to put up more points against us than that.”
