The administrators at Descanso Gardens have announced that the gardens will reopen on May 16.
Visitors and staff will be safe in the garden under its new plan. Descanso is an outdoor space, which makes it possible to practice social distancing. Each membership will be extended for two months for the time missed. An email with all the extension details will be sent soon.
The biggest change is that the number of visitors will be limited each day. Members can enter Descanso without a ticket by showing their valid membership card. Those who are not members and guests not covered under a membership will need advance timed tickets.
When visiting:
- Maintain social distance of six feet or more with staff and other visitors
- Wear a mask
- Bring water (all drinking fountains are closed)
- Those who are not members must get a ticket in advance
- Note that Descanso Gardens will be a cashless establishment
Other changes include:
- Additional hours have been added to allow for visits to be spread out over longer times (the gardens will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The members-only hour is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.)
- The entry is reconfigured to make social distancing easier
- Hand sanitizing stations can be found in the courtyard
- All staff and visitors will wear masks
- All indoor spaces are closed, including the Gift Shop, Sturt Haaga Gallery and Boddy House
- All drinking fountains are closed
- Restrooms will be cleaned every half hour
- There will be no programs or walks during this time. This programming will return as soon as it is safe.
- Seating has been removed in the courtyard to give space for social distancing
- The Enchanted Railroad will be closed for now
- Wheelchair rental will not be available
- The Kitchen at Descanso will be open for limited hours. Drinks can be purchased, which can be taken into the garden, and food must be eaten in the picnic area or taken home.
