LA County Updates Its COVID-19 Numbers – May 26

The Los Angeles County Dept. of Public Health confirmed 27 new deaths due to COVID-19 reported on May 26. This brings the total of deaths in LA County due to COVID-19 to 2,143.

As of May 24 Glendale has reported 76 deaths due to COVID-19, La Cañada Flintridge has reported five, nine deaths in Eagle Rock, 14 in Sunland and 10 in Tujunga. In the unincorporated areas of LA County, Altadena has reported five and one death in La Crescenta Montrose.

“To all of you who have lost someone you love to COVID-19, you are in our thoughts and prayers. We wish you healing and peace during this very sad time,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, director of Public Health. “As improved infection control practices and testing have increased over the last month, deaths among residents in nursing homes have dropped from 174 deaths for the week ending May 2 to 60 deaths for the week ending May 23. We continue to work with our partners to ensure that all facilities protect employees and residents.”

Of the 2,143 total deaths in LA County, 47% were in skilled nursing facilities. Testing capacity continues to increase across skilled nursing facilities in LA County with support from Public Health, the Los Angeles County Dept. of Health Services and the City of Los Angeles. As of Friday, 157 skilled nursing facilities have tested all residents and staff, and an additional 68 are being scheduled. Public Health continues to schedule appointments with other skilled nursing facilities to complete testing, conduct on-site inspections and survey bed capacity, staffing capacity and availability of personal protective equipment.

As of May 25, LA County has confirmed 1,843 new positive cases of COVID-19 bringing the total to 47,822 cases. The total number includes 943 cases reported in the City of Glendale, 49 in La Cañada Flintridge, 169 in Eagle Rock, 10 in Shadow Hills, 141 in Sunland and Tujunga has reported 113 cases. In the unincorporated areas of LA County, Altadena has 143 cases reported and La Crescenta/Montrose has reported 29 cases.
