A protest led by family and friends of Colin Jacobs has been planned for Monday in front of the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA.
On July 1, Colin, who was only a few days from his 21st birthday, drowned at the YMCA pool at the La Crescenta YMCA. Colin had a long history with the YMCA of the Foothills and was working as a camp counselor at the time of his death.
The protest, according to Colin’s father Phillip, is a way to draw attention to his son’s death and also hopefully a way for him to get answers as to how Colin died.
Phillip said when he asked questions about his son’s drowning he was directed to the YMCA’s attorney. The family has hired an attorney now as well but still feels they are not receiving the full story of what happened that day. The family has spoken with a few of Colin’s friends who there.
“Colin and two other counselors went into the pool [with kids from the camp]. They were all playing dodge ball,” Phillip said of what he has been told by others.
He said one of the counselors said Colin was “there one minute then gone;” he thought he had gotten out of the pool; however, apparently Colin may have had a seizure and gone under the water.
Phillip said he just wants answers to how long Colin was under water, how many lifeguards were actually on duty that day as well as more information from others who were there.
Monday’s protest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in front of the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA at 1930 Foothill Blvd. Phillip said they chose that location because it is where the Foothills YMCA corporate offices are located.
