June W. Dougherty

June W. Dougherty, long time La Cañada Flintridge resident, died Thursday, Jan. 6 of natural causes. She was 90.

Born Aug. 5, 1920 in Los Angeles, June’s family moved to Arcadia in 1932 where she attended Monrovia Arcadia Duarte High School. In 1942 she received a BA in home economics from UCLA and in that same year married James Dougherty. Together they raised three children. In 1956 the family moved to La Cañada Flintridge.

June had many interests including politics, art, weaving and history and was active in Pasadena’s League of Women Voters, Descanso Gardens and the Lanterman House. She compiled “Sources of History – La Crescenta” and authored “La Cañada Flintridge,” a small local history book used by third graders today.

She is remembered by family and friends for her lifelong learning, her willingness to share her interests and her encouragement of others in their pursuits.

She is survived by daughter Candace; sons John (Kathleen) and Tom (Barbara); grandsons Tim (Vicki), Ken and Brian (Erin); and great grandchildren Alyssa, Jenna, Olivia, Kate, Jack and Noah.

Audrey Hall Packard

Longtime Glendale resident Audrey Constance Hall Packard passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Jan. 8 at 90 years of age.

Audrey was born Dec. 5, 1920 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, to Robert Hall and Edith Murray. Her father, a master woodworker, had first immigrated to the United States from Carlisle in northern England and eventually settled in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Once established, he sent for his fiancée from his hometown. After a few years and the birth of their son, they moved to Vancouver, where Audrey was born.

The family moved to Los Angeles in 1927. After the death of her father in 1934, Audrey, her mother and her brother, Woody, spent a year in Australia with maternal relatives and upon their return, she graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1939. While working in Los Angeles for an insurance firm, Audrey met and married Fred L. Packard.  They were married in the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles on Sept. 7, 1958.

Audrey’s love for her family and friends extended to her community as well. She gave generously of her time and energy to many worthwhile organizations. These included: the Women’s Committee of the Glendale Symphony Orchestra Association where she served as president; the La Crescenta Valley Republican Women’s Federation, as president; P.E.O. Chapter KO (since 1972); and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, also president. Sharing their love of music, ranging from symphonies to jazz, she and her husband, Fred, were active in the Glendale Community Concerts. While residing at Windsor Manor, Audrey was in charge of their monthly “English Tea” and was chairman of their Flower Committee as well as a member of the Amenities Committee. To have Audrey as a friend was to have a friend for a lifetime.

She is predeceased by her husband Fred L. Packard, and her brother Woodrow Hall and her sister-in-law Margaret Mitchell Hall. She is survived by nieces Connie Hall Luder, Joan Hall Redwine (Thomas); sister-in-law Rita Hall and cousin Robert E.W. Murray of Newcastle-upon-Tine, England, as well as great nieces and great, great nieces and a nephew.

A memorial service will be held at Windsor Manor, 1230 E. Windsor Road, Glendale on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 11:00 a.m. to be followed by a light luncheon at the Manor.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society.
