VIRTUAL MEETING PLANNED FOR AFRICAN VIOLET SOCIETY
The Burbank African Violet Society is having its next Zoom club meeting today, Thursday, Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. The program will be a group discussion led by club members John Hershey and Wanda Penner, “African Violet Growing Mediums Success and Failures.” The discussion includes potting soil mixes that have been successes and what potting soil mixes have been failures.

SIERRA CLUB VIRTUAL ACTIVITY
The Crescenta Valley group of the Sierra Club invites the community to a free, two-day film festival online for families, seniors and children.
On Feb. 20-21 the Club pays a virtual visit to the Inspiring Connections Outdoors (ICO, LA) 2021 Film Festival. These youth- and child-friendly outdoor short films will open viewers’ eyes to amazing new experiences and inspire them to take the family and go for a walk or a hike!
This two-day celebration of diverse stories in the outdoors benefits the Sierra Club’s ICO Youth Program.
The film festival begins at 4 p.m. PST and is free, although donations are appreciated.

DEMOCRATIC CLUB TO HEAR REFLECTION ON ONLINE HATE MOVEMENTS
Guest Rick Eaton, director of Research at the Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Museum of Tolerance, will be featured from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sunday, Feb. 21 Zoom meeting of the Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club. He will speak on “A New Era of Hate Online: The 2020 Election and Beyond.”
Eaton is also co-director of the Center’s Digital Terrorism and Hate Project. Along with Associate Dean Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Eaton regularly meets with Facebook, Twitter, Google/YouTube and other social networking companies to give feedback and assist in shaping policy.
In an undercover role, he has met many leading white supremacists, militia figures, Islamic extremists and helped expose Nazis in Argentina.
In other business, results will be presented of the ADEM election, which presented delegates, by Assembly district, who vote on California Democratic Party endorsements. Two members of the Democratic Club won along with 12 others from Assembly District 43. Local winners are Desiree Portillo Rabinov and Susan Mastrodemos.
The Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club serves the Crescenta Valley and Sunland-Tujunga. The meetings are open to anyone and are free of charge. Zoom log-in for the meeting can be found on the Club’s website, ccdemclub.org.

NEW PROGRAM OFFERED BY CSCP
Cancer Support Community Pasadena (CSCP) has launched a variety of new virtual programming in 2021 aiming to better serve the community as the pandemic stretches into its second calendar year. CSCP invites Black members of the community to attend a free informational session at 6 p.m. on Feb. 22 via Zoom. CSCP board member Natalie Smalley will facilitate the discussion and share how she benefitted from CSCP’s programs during her own cancer journey.
During this informational session, guests will also learn about the organization’s new support group for Black members of the community who are impacted by cancer. This group will meet virtually on Thursdays from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. starting on April 1, and will be facilitated by Christine Rodriguez, MSW.
