As Glendale Community College students begin their spring semester this week school athletes patiently await the fate of sports for the remainder of the academic year. A decision will come within the next few weeks, according to the school’s Sports Information Director Alex Leon.
The Vaqueros’ athletics were split into two seasons this year: Phase 1 and Phase 2, similar to the way in which CIF divided high school sports this year.
Phase 1, which included indoor sports basketball and volleyball along with the usual fall staples – football, soccer and cross-country – has already been cancelled, shifting the school’s focus to Phase 2, which includes baseball, softball, track and field, tennis, golf and beach volleyball – all outdoor sports.
Glendale College, which competes in the Western State Conference, is assessing its current situation under the guidance of the California Community College Athletic Association. The CCCAA provides suggestions that trickle down to each of its 12 conferences. Each conference then sets its own guidelines in accordance with the CCCAA, which gives each school the opportunity to make the final decision to compete or opt out.
Classes at GCC will remain online for the remainder of the school year; it has not yet been determined if students will return to campus this summer or in the fall.
