Best Wishes to All for the Holidays and New Year!

The Crescenta Valley Town Council hopes you, your family, and friends have a lovely holiday season filled with joy and meaning. The best part of this time of year is remembering those who make the holidays meaningful. We wish you all the love and happiness this season can bring and may these follow you throughout the coming new year.

As gifts are given and received this holiday season, we think of the gift of knowing you. Thank you for the pleasure of being citizens of our community that cares: La Crescenta and Montrose.

It was a privilege to join Rabbi Mendy Grossbaum and the Jewish community of La Cañada and La Crescenta to celebrate Hanukkah at Memorial Park. While lighting the menorah, we remembered the power and beauty of bringing light to the darkest moments, not only because of the challenges we’ve overcome due to the pandemic but also the hate and anti-Semitism our Jewish brothers and sisters endured for generations. All residents have the power to be a light and promote acceptance.

LA County Dept. of Parks and Recs will give a presentation on the proposed Eagle Canyon Channel Trail, which includes a multi-use trail beginning at the NE intersection of La Crescenta Avenue and El Caminito along the flood control channel connecting to Two Strike Park, on Jan. 3, 2022 at 6 p.m. at Veteran’s Hall, 4011 La Crescenta Ave. Space is limited.

Annually, the Crescenta Valley Town Council holds an election to fill three regular and three alternate positions. The Council forms an Election Committee that is charged with conducting the election. Eligible persons interested in running for a position on the Council are encouraged to submit an application. This year, the application deadline was Nov. 10.

The Election Committee received several applications from prospective candidates and reviewed them to ensure their eligibility in accordance with Council bylaws (which have been in force for several years).

As part of this review, it was found that Johnny Brookbank (an applicant) is not eligible to run for or to serve on the Council.

According to the Council bylaws, to run for office or to serve on the Council a person must not have been subject to discipline for a period of two years. Earlier this year, the Council voted unanimously to censure Mr. Brookbank after an investigation was conducted. As a result of this, the bylaws dictate that Mr. Brookbank is not currently eligible to run for a position on or to serve on the Council.

The Election Committee reported this to the Council and a majority agreed. Mr. Brookbank was not included on the ballot and his application fee was returned.

Recently Mr. Brookbank has initiated what appears to be a write-in campaign.

Mr. Brookbank is ineligible to run for or to serve on Crescenta Valley Town Council. There is no provision for write-in candidates in the Council bylaws. However, even if there were, Mr. Brookbank would still be ineligible for the reasons described.

Submitting an application does not automatically mean an applicant’s name will appear on the ballot. Mr. Brookbank’s name was never on the ballot and therefore was never removed.

The Council looks forward to the upcoming election, which will take place Dec. 10 (5 p.m. – 8 p.m.) and Dec. 11 (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.) at Sadler Hall at St. Luke’s of the Mountains Episcopal Church, 2563 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta (at Rosemont).
