Arcadia: the Last Hope for Pacific League Glory in the CIF SS Tournaments

By Justin HAGER

And then there was one.

Despite unprecedented levels of success for the Pacific League in which both Crescenta Valley High School and John Burroughs High School in Burbank qualified teams in every sport in the CIF Southern Section winter championship tournament, the Pacific League is down to its last man standing. Although in this case, the “last man” is the group of talented and impressive young women who comprise the Arcadia High School girls’ soccer team. The Apaches, which finished 6-1 in league play, 12-3-3 overall, and runner-up to CVHS in the Pacific League, has been on fire during the team’s CIF run. They were scheduled to face off last night against Sierra Canyon in the Division 4 semi-final match. Unfortunately, the result of the contest was not available at press time.

The CV Weekly readership area entered the week with five teams remaining in three of the CIF SS tournaments.

In boys’ basketball, St. Francis was still alive in Division 1 and Providence (Burbank) was alive in Division 3AA. Both teams fell on Friday, Feb. 18 with St. Francis losing to J Serra 65-56 and Providence losing to Rancho Cucamonga 71-57.

In girls’ basketball, Burbank looked like it could make a deep run in Division 3A until it fell 47-31 to Shadow Hills on Saturday night.

And in girls’ soccer, the aforementioned Arcadia defeated Cabrillo 2-1 in the quarterfinal while Flintridge Prep lost to El Segundo 3-0.
