The Crescenta Valley High School Falcons boys’ baseball team continued its dominant run in the Pacific League on Tuesday with a 10-1 victory over Muir. The game looked to be in Falcon control from the start when CVHS senior Kris McCollum blasted a leadoff double and then came around to score by advancing on a sacrifice fly and a throw to first. The Falcons added to their lead in the fourth when Noah Shorkey hit a double to drive in two more. But despite a strong performance from starting pitcher Jameson Ferraro, who tossed eight strikeouts in six innings and allowed only two hits and two walks, the Mustangs only trailed by two entering the seventh and final inning. That’s when the Falcons turned on the jets, batting around the order and scoring seven runs to seal the victory.

CVHS is now 5-0 in League play and 11-4 overall. They have beat Pacific League opponents by a combined score of 45-6 and are currently atop in the Pacific League standings, tied with Burbank High School, which they play next week.

Burbank has been similarly dominant, going 5-0 in League play and outscoring its League opponents 40-1. Both teams are currently just outside the MaxPreps Top 100 for California, meaning that a sweep of the series by either team would likely lead to a top-100 ranking and control of its own destiny in the Pacific League.

Excellent defensive play like this play by Falcon second baseman Nico Terenzi held the Mustangs to just one run.

Burbank and CV are not alone in the chase for the Pacific League title this year. Thus far, the League has been heavily divided with four teams that are undefeated in League play, and four teams that have yet to win a game in League. Burroughs, which is also 5-0 in League play, played a challenging non-League schedule and currently sits at 9-5 overall and in fourth place in the League. Arcadia is also undefeated at 4-0 but has been much less productive offensively, winning its League matches by a combined 26-8 and going 10-4 overall to put it one win behind CVHS and in third in the standings. Burroughs plays Arcadia next week, setting up a possible leap frog scenario in the standing should either team sweep while Burbank or CV split. Meanwhile, the bottom of the pack will also sort itself next week as Glendale plays Muir and Hoover plays Pasadena.
