WIMBLEDON CHAMPION TO VISIT AREA TENNIS SHOP

Vania King, formerly one of the world’s top tennis doubles players whose Grand Slam titles include Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 2010, will visit The Racket Doctor in Atwater Village on Saturday, April 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome, supporting Serving Up Hope, a non-profit organization co-founded by King to develop tennis programs for underprivileged youth in the Los Angeles area. Visitors are encouraged to bring gently used kids athletic clothing and racquets, which will be donated to Serving Up Hope programs.

AAUW HOSTS JENNIFER KREBSBACH

The Glendale Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will meet on Saturday, April 9 at 9 a.m. via Zoom. The speaker will be Jennifer Krebsbach, M.A., M.S., BCBA. Her topic will be promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Krebsbach has master degrees in behavior analysis and education- gender equity studies. She is starting a PhD program in sociology at UC Davis. She works as a freelance researcher with interests in inequity in the tenure and promotion process in academia. After an in-depth explanation of intersectionality, unconscious bias and allyship, she will lead individual activities and brainstorming of ways to promote diversity, equity and inclusion.

CO-EXISTING WITH BACKYARD WILDLIFE IN THE CRESCENTA VALLEY

Little Landers Historical Society invites the community to visit Bolton Hall Museum on Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m. for its April program presented by urban wildlife specialist Dana Stangel.

Stangel will answer questions surrounding how to keep family and pets safe from wildlife that shares local space. Her company, Teranga Ranch, conducts wildlife educational programs, backyard consultations and field trips teaching local residents how to coexist with wild neighbors.

This event is free and open to the public; everyone is welcome.

BENITA BIKE’S DANCEART PERFORMS IN SYLMAR

Benita Bike’s DanceArt, in conjunction with Los Angeles Mission College’s Philosophy Dept. and Dept. of Arts, Media & Performance, presents an “Explore Dance” program at Mission College’s AMP Theater on Tuesday, April 12 at 7 p.m. The AMP Theater is located at 13356 Eldridge Ave. in Sylmar. This free performance is supported, in part, by the City of Los Angeles’ Dept. of Cultural Affairs.

Benita Bike’s DanceArt, now in its 41^st season, is a Los Angeles based modern dance company that receives praise for its polished concert work and extensive community arts outreach. The Company is experienced at introducing dance to new viewers and enriching the experience of those already familiar with the dance art. Like a chamber music ensemble, the dancers of Benita Bike’s DanceArt perform with uncommon sensitivity to one another, bringing intense beauty and vibrancy to each delicately crafted, expressive movement. Benita Bike’s DanceArt will present excerpts from a new work-in-progress along with selections from repertory.

MOVIE NIGHT IN CV PARK

La Crescenta non-profit The Balcony of LA will be hosting a family-friendly movie night in CV Park directly after the Spring Jubilee on April 15. Screening begins around 7:30 p.m. and ends around 9 p.m. Bring your own blanket, chairs, pillows. Bring a picnic if you’d like. Bring the kids or a neighbor. Bring a smile and a great attitude – we’d love to meet you!

The Balcony will also supply some premium food truck options so be sure to come out with a hungry tummy and get some grub prior to the screening. We’ll be viewing the award-winning “Pixar Shorts Collection.”

THE VERDUGO HUUT (HOOTENANY)

“Tender Folk Songs for Sensitive People” arrives at the sanctuary at UUV on April 16. This funny, irreverent, virtuosi, and inclusive show is for audiences age 13 and up. It will take place in person from 7-9p.m. It features Raspin Stuwart, Jackie Monahan, Don Cummings and host Marty Barrett.

BURBANK AFRICAN VIOLET SOCIETY NEXT MEETING

The Burbank African Violet Society will be having its next club meeting on Thursday morning April 21 at 10 a.m. The location is The Little White Chapel Christian Church, 1711 N. Avon St. in Burbank.

Club President Chris Hedberg will be presenting the program: “Grooming Your African Violet for Show.” The members and guests are being asked to bring to the club meeting their African violets that need the most grooming. This will be a hands-on workshop with participants getting their hands dirty while learning some techniques in grooming our African violets.

THE STORY OF THE VERDUGO HILLS CEMETERY

Little Landers Historical Society invites visitors to view a recently installed temporary exhibit at Bolton Hall Museum featuring the local pioneer cemetery, now in its 100^th year. The first burial was that of beloved local preacher Pastor Wornum on April 22, 1922. The Hills of Peace, as it was known early on, became the final resting place of many local community pioneers with burials continuing through the late 1970s.

The exhibit traces the history of the cemetery through good times and not so good times up to today’s restoration conducted by the Friends of the Verdugo Hills Cemetery.

Exhibit viewing hours through June 2022 are Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment.

EARLY ARMENIAN IMMIGRATION ON TGHS ROSTER

The community is invited to hear The Glendale Historical Society board member Ani Mnatsakanyan on April 28 at 7 p.m. as she shares stories of resilience and strength in the Armenian American community. She’ll recount how Armenians reconstruct their lives in a foreign land while attempting to preserve their identity and memories of the homeland they were forced to leave behind.

JBHS PLANS REUNION

Calling all graduates from John Burroughs High School class of 1962!

The 60^th year class reunion celebration will be held at the Burbank Elks Lodge at 2232 N. Hollywood Way in Burbank on Saturday, June 25 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Come and renew old friendships, share memories and catch up on what’s new. The Reunion Committee has planned an evening of fine dining, music enjoyed “back in the day” in addition to video and photo opportunities to capture the moments of this grand event. VHHS PLANS REUNION

“Team 74” is planning a 50th high school reunion in 2024. Friends and graduates of Verdugo Hills High School are invited to attend to trade stories of family, careers, adventures and anything else.

Currently Team 74 is in the planning phase of collecting names and numbers of classmates and putting together a database; emails from classmates can be received at clsof74reunion@yahoo.com. Information should include a mailing address, cell number and graduate’s name at graduation (if different than now).

A list of frequently asked questions will be provided to keep everyone updated as the reunion plans move forward. Those who belong to various VHHS groups will see redundant information to ensure all classmates are notified and have an opportunity to attend.

At this time the FB VHHS groups will be the reunion information outlet until a more focused site is created.
