GLENDALE KIWANIS

The Kiwanis Club of Glendale will be dark on Sept. 30. The program for Oct. 7 is a presentation by Dr. Ryan Cornner, the new president of Glendale Community College. The cost to attend, which includes lunch, is $15. Meetings start at noon.

The Club meets Friday afternoons at the Elks Lodge, 120 E. Colorado Blvd. in Glendale.

WORKS ON PAPER AT THE BRAND LIBRARY & ART CENTER

Glendale Library Arts & Culture announced the Brand Associates’ opening of its 50th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Works on Paper at the Brand Library & Art Center from continuing through Dec. 30. The exhibition, also known as Brand 50, marks 50 years of featuring the best in local and national contemporary art with 89 artworks chosen from 1200-plus submissions selected by juror Shannon Currie Holmes, Exhibitions supervisor at Brand Library & Art Center.

Brand 50 brings together artists from diverse backgrounds, including artists making their first foray into a gallery, as well as seasoned professionals whose work is widely known. In conjunction with the Brand 50 juried exhibition, there will also be a gallery looking back on the history of these exhibits with artworks spanning the earliest years when ceramics were featured, to today’s focus on the paper medium. All exhibit artworks and a printed catalog will be on sale with proceeds benefitting the Brand Associates’ efforts to support a rich array of cultural, arts, and educational programming at the iconic Brand Library & Art Center.

FALL SPECTACULAR CVHS CONCERT

On Saturday, Oct. 1 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., the CVHS Music Dept. is having its Fall Spectacular Concert at the school’s amphitheater and upper field. The evening will feature the finest musicians and entertainers of CVHS plus dinner and silent auction.

Tickets are $10 for the concert only; $15 for dinner (two pieces of pizza, chips and a drink) and concert.

FREE LECTURE: SEGREGATING THE FOOTHILLS

On Sunday, Oct. 2 at 2 p.m., the Lanterman House will host a presentation on segregation in the foothills.

Racial segregation in Los Angeles suburbs like La Cañada Flintridge and La Crescenta increased rapidly in the first half of the 20th century, driven by real estate practices such as restrictive property deeds and redlining. In this talk, historian Becky Nicolaides explores the history of racial exclusion in Los Angeles, its lasting legacy and proactive ways to achieve lasting racial justice in our communities.

Nicolaides is a founding partner of the History Studio and author of the forthcoming book “The New Suburbia: Life in L.A. Suburbs since 1945.”

CONCERT PLANNED

The Tuesday Musicale of Pasadena is presenting a concert on Oct. 4 at 12:30 p.m. at the Altadena Baptist Church, 791 East Calaveras in Altadena. It is free to attend.

On the program will be a duo for viola and cello by Piston; a duo piano solo by Liszt; arias for soprano by Puccini & Wagner; and a horn trio by Brahms.

PEBBLES OF THE PAST

On Oct. 8 at 1 p.m., the Little Landers Society presents “Pebbles of the Past” by Craig Durst.

His presentation of little-known facts of the history of the Tujunga Valley takes the audience on a search for the Lost Padres Mine, the Land of the Sun, the history of Seven Hills Ranch and the local Gold Rush – California’s first gold rush!

Durst will share several of his recent history hunts to uncover some “pebbles” of the Tujunga Valley’s historic past. Since discovering in the 1990s that his new home in Lake View Terrace was next to the ancient Indian Village of Tehunga, Durst has embarked on dozens of local history hunts and related research. His excellent narrative and collection of historic images help complete the picture of local history.

This event is free and open to the public and everyone is welcome. It will be held at Bolton Hall Museum, Home of Little Landers Historical Society, 10110 Commerce Ave. in Tujunga.

SILVER LAKE BRANCH LIBRARY INVITES COMMUNITY TO STAR WARS READS DAY

The Silver Lake Branch Library invites the community to join the Force and celebrate the love of reading at Star Wars Reads Day on Saturday, Oct. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2411 Glendale Blvd. Explore a galaxy far, far away with storytimes, crafts, giveaways and a short show by a Star Wars performance group. All ages are welcome. Costumes encouraged.

 

MONA ANNOUNCES  DISPLAY

The Museum of Neon Art announced the display of “Leticia Maldonado: The Storytellers” on Oct. 8 through Feb. 11. The opening will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 8 and is free to the public. This is the first solo museum exhibition for the artist. Maldonado challenges the conventions of sculpture as well as the constraints of the medium of neon through her multimedia works. In this exhibition, life-size sculptural forms made out of neon, Plexiglass, found objects and vintage technology speak to narratives that bind memory, intimacy and history.

The museum is located at 216 S. Brand Blvd. in Glendale. It is closed Monday and Tuesday; open Wednesday – Saturday from 10:45 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. and on Sunday from 10:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m.

 

JEWEL CITY KNITTERS MONTHLY MEETING

AUTHOR FROST BECKNER AT FLINTRIDGE BOOKSTORE

On Thursday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. Flintridge Bookstore will present author /screenwriter Michael Frost Beckner for a reading and signing of his Spy Game novels. Beckner is best known for the CBS series “The Agency,: his iconic film “Spy Game,” and the Sniper film franchise. Beckner’s Spy Game novels – “Muir’s Gambit,” “Bishop’s Endgame” and “Aiken in Check” – comprise The Aiken Trilogy. They take place both before and after the time frame of the Robert Redford/Brad Pitt movie, expanding on the storyline of this thrilling espionage tale.

The reading takes place outside in back of the store. The signing is inside.

BIG STRIKE AUCTION PLANNED

“Gather Around the Campfire” is the theme of the 47th annual Big Strike Auction benefiting the Boy Scouts of America – Verdugo Hills Council.

LCFOG PLANS SPECIAL LUNCHEON

The Annual Book and Author Luncheon hosted by the La Cañada Flintridge Orthopaedic Guild will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. This is the Guild’s major fundraising event dedicated solely to support the children treated at Luskin Orthopaedic Institute for Children, formerly called Orthopaedic Hospital of Los Angeles. The funds raised provide children with musculoskeletal injuries or disorders excellent pediatric orthopaedic medical care to grow well and play well, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

FUTTERMAN FEATURED AT ALTADENA TOWN AND COUNTRY CLUB

The Altadena Town and Country Club is exhibiting the work of Chinese brush painting artist Mayee Futterman through the end of December.

The one-woman show, titled “The Four Treasures – The Art of Mayee Futterman,” displays 46 vibrant floral, landscape and animal-creature paintings.

Futterman, an Asian-American artist, recently won BMW’s international design competition for the limited edition M4 GT4 racing car called “Fluid Power.” Her work is collected internationally by individuals and institutions including the Los Angeles Center for Women’s Health at the California Hospital Medical Center. She is an instructor at UCLA Extension, Huntington Beach Art Center and the Institute of Chinese Language and Culture.

VHHS PLANS REUNION

“Team 74” is planning a 50th high school reunion in 2024. Friends and graduates of Verdugo Hills High School are invited to attend to trade stories of family, careers, adventures and anything else.

Currently Team 74 is in the planning phase of collecting names and numbers of classmates and putting together a database; emails from classmates can be received at clsof74reunion@yahoo.com. Information should include a mailing address, cell number and graduate’s name at graduation (if different than now).

A list of frequently asked questions will be provided to keep everyone updated as the reunion plans move forward. Those who belong to various VHHS groups will see redundant information to ensure all classmates are notified and have an opportunity to attend.

At this time the FB VHHS groups will be the reunion information outlet until a more focused site is created.
