July 2, 1950 – Oct. 3, 2022
Gilbert Ignacio Garcia – devoted and beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, neighbor and friend – passed away very suddenly of natural causes on Monday, Oct. 3 at the age of 72.
Gilbert was born in Los Angeles on July 2, 1950 to Ignacio and Lucy Garcia. His parents raised Gilbert and his brother George in the heart of Los Angeles within Boyle Heights near Brooklyn Avenue, posthumously named Cesar E. Chavez Avenue. Gilbert went on to graduate from Cathedral High School.
In the 1980s, Gil began calling our foothills his home. He worked diligently to support his family as a Safeway Vons clerk for nearly 40 years, and a professional window cleaner servicing the foothill community for over 35 years via Gilbert’s Window Cleaning.
Gilbert loved his morning coffee, reading his newspaper and books, listening to smooth jazz and the oldies, gardening, watching the Dodgers and other favorite sports teams, looking at the foothills from his patio with his wife, dining at Joselito’s and Hill Street Café, running into friends around town, walking his dog Yuna and, most of all, talking to and spending quality time with loved ones.
Gilbert is survived by his wife Clarisa Garcia; brother George Garcia (wife Gail); sons Paul Garcia (wife Liliana Garcia), Andy Garcia and Ben Domino (wife Jenny Domino); daughter Mary Claire Garcia (husband Jon Hickenbottom); Gloria Garcia; sister-in-law Rita Mitchell, brother-in-law Rick Casillas; adored grandchildren Andrew, Matthew, Aiden, Ashley, Daryl, Derek, Andi Rose and Rylie, along with many beloved extended family, friends, neighbors and his dog Yuna. Gil joins his parents, his son Jason Garcia, and his daughter Claire Domino in heaven.
A viewing vigil will be held at Glendale Forest Lawn’s Wee Kirk Chapel on Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. A service to celebrate Gilbert’s life will be held at Christian Life Church, 3013 Montrose Ave., on Wednesday, Nov. 2 from noon to 1 p.m.
Gilbert’s contagious smile and vivacious spirit is tremendously missed. Vaya con Dios, Dad!
