The Cañada Auxiliary of Professionals, known as CAP, has awarded a $2,000 scholarship to a local high school graduate attending a two-year college or occupational program. CAP is an auxiliary of the Assistance League of Flintridge (ALF). The award was presented to the recipient at the Sept. 21 CAP meeting.
Kylie Sears, a La Cañada High School graduate, is the scholarship recipient. Kylie is attending Glendale Community College and plans to become a public policy lawyer. CAP found Kylie to be a well-rounded student who played varsity volleyball and basketball, served as vice president for Girls Who Code, and a recipient of both the Silver and Gold Awards from the Girl Scouts of America.
Kylie’s Silver Award was for completing “chemo care kits” for cancer patients. Her inspiration was a close relationship with a cancer patient undergoing treatment. Kylie’s Gold Award focused on educating younger girls on how to get involved in issues facing their communities. Kylie partnered with the National Women’s Political Caucus to bring local and state female leaders to age-appropriate seminars she organized. As a result of this project, Kylie was chosen as a member of the Tournament of Roses Troop for 2022 and was invited to accompany the La Cañada Flintridge float in the Rose Parade.
Kylie is involved in her church council, holds two jobs and participates in rallies for social justice issues. In addition, she has worked as a poll worker through Los Angeles County.
CAP members participate in five philanthropic programs. In addition to the Scholarship Program, CAP administers Cappy Bears, SPROUTS, and CAP Care PACs, and works with ALF on Operation School Bell. CAP philanthropies are supported by sales in the Bargain Box, ALF’s thrift shop.
