Tonight at 7 p.m. the Crescenta Valley Armenian Community and Youth Center will be hosting a free workshop titled, “Teenagers and the Law.”

The workshop is part of an educational series developed by the center to help community members in areas that specifically pertain to teenagers including the law, taxes, immigration laws and resources for graduating high school students.

The workshop is part of the efforts of the center’s Outreach Committee that was formed in December, according to Arick Gervorkian, center spokesman.

The committee invited about 85 members of various agencies in the community to a mixer at their center when they introduced their workshop goals.

The workshop tonight is designed to answer questions parents and teens may have about current laws and how they are relevant to juveniles as well as what happens after a child turns 18.

“We are going to be talking about what the law covers,” Gevorkian said.

There will be members of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Glendale police and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

“Capt. [David]Silversparre has taken this very seriously, ” he said.

Gevorkian added that it was important for law enforcement to reach out to different cultures within the community.

“Not my generation but our parents that came from other countries often did not have good relationships with the authorities,” he said. His hope is that law enforcement can bridge a communication gap that can sometimes occur.

In addition to answering questions concerning specific laws the workshop will also provide support and education on preventive measures parents can take now to keep their children safe. Some of the issues that will be discussed are gangs, and what to do if your child is going to a party that you are concerned about.

The outreach workshop is for all in the community who would like help.
